Actually, that's not true. Look underneath the mount and you'll see the contacts where you can connect the Garmin battery to allow charging while cycling.
I just turn my device off while charging.
On long rides, I sometimes charge the battery WHILE I am cycling, and want it to continue to record while charging.
If the device is already off when you plug it in (eg. at home), it will open the charging screen, but it won't turn on. Or you can just turn the device off yourself while charging.
