Switch temporarily to silent / easier readable map / change light network / Heart rate variability (Stress Score)

Hi,

I've got a coule of questions regarding the 530:

1) Is there a quick way of turning off audio temporarily? For example the audio notifications are annoying and unnecessary when I ride with the Garmin Varia radar RTL510 near a busy road as it is beeping all the time or when I take a short break and it keeps reminding me that my cadence is too low or someone gets close to the radar.

2) Are you using the standard map? I find it really hard to distinguish my (usually Komoot) route from the other roads, sometimes I don't even see the roads on the map (I'm usually riding with sunglasses as most people in sunny countries will do or to tell whether a road is gravel or tarmac. It doesn't have to look nice in the first place, it needs to be functional!

The same applies to the data fileds, the description of the data field could be smaller such that the data values can be larger.

3) Is there a way to create an individual light network which changes according to the brightness? I'm using the automatic mode, but the RTL510 is so bright that other cyclists get annoyed. ;-)

4) I don't need the lap button, would be great if I could reconfigure it to another function.

5) Are you using the heart rate variability measurement (Garmin calls it stress score). This could be quite a cool feature. However I'm not sure on how it is supposed to work in my daily life. I wake up. Ideally this is the time to measure the stress score - every day! So I get my 530, which I might place next to my bed, and put on the chest strap. I go through numerous menus (yikes) to finally start the measurement. The lights on my bike flash beause the 530 has created a light network in the mean time. THe 530 keeps beeping (see 1)!) because it has connected to numerous sensors, cannot find GPS, etc. Well... do I explain why I don't use this feature any more? Is there a way to make this routine easier?

Thanks and stay healthy!

  • 1. I don't think so.  It is either on or off.  You could turn off cadence alerts so that won't make anything beep.

    2.  Use a different map.  Different maps will have different colour schemes & line types.  You can even create your own map with the colour scheme & line types you prefer if you really want to.  I use my own maps partly because I prefer a different colour scheme.

You can have larger data fields so the value is bigger.  You will get less per screen though.

    4. You can't reconfigure the buttons as far as I know.

    5. If you turn the lights off when you finish a ride the unit can't connect to them when you turn it on in the morning.  If the unit is connecting to other sensors then it is because something has woken them up (they have moved recently).  If they are not woken up then the unit won't connect to them when it is turned on.  The HRV is probably best used via a wearable device during the day I guess.

  • Thanks for the reply!

    1) That's unfortunate. But yeah, I'll turn off cadence alarms eventually, it's just for the moment because I want to train higher cadences.

    2) Yeah, that's probably what I'll do.

Have a look at Wahoo, their ratio between value and field description size is much better.

    5)  True, it won't connect to speed and cadence sensors. The GPS alarm remains. And how practical is it to turn the (by the way really convenient!) light network off?

My knowledge is that HRV is best measured immediately after waking up. That's e.g. ithlete's recommendation. I guess the Edge is not the best device for doing so.

  • I don't use the Garmin lights or radars so I really can't help with those features.  If you can put up with the GPS beep in the morning then keep using the device for the HRV stuff.

  • Are you using it for HRV?

you should, the radar is awesome :)

  • I don't use the HRV stuff much.  I occasionally try it out.

  • 4. Day Flash is seriously bright (120 lumens from memory). Night Flash and Continuous are only 60 lumens, so perhaps more bunch-friendly for early morning rides. With Automatic mode, I think it defaults to Day Flash after sunrise.

    5. Use the Timer Start option for the light network, rather than Device Power Up.

  • That’s what I’m using, but the lights Stil Pflaster once they are connected (and stay off then until the timer is started)

would be nice to know which settings Garmin uses for trail and high visibility mode

  • Btw correct values are 20/29/65 lm, probably other cyclists would punch me if it would be 120 :-D
