Anybody Using Garmin Live Segments?

Hi all,

since Strava Live segments appear to be a bit glitchy (and expensive when compared to free), I am considering changing to Garmin segments. Is anybody using Garmin segments (preferably successfully)? Did you use segments during navigation (should only work when loading courses created in Garmin Connect Web) and if so did this work? What happens if you create a new segment - do you have to load a given course again to get live guidance?

  • Strava Live segments were good on my 520 but they are rubbish on my 530 from what I have experienced it's the inferior GPS chip in the 530 and nothing to do Strava.

  • I can use Strava segments although they don’t show up a lot...seems to help if they are starred segments. Was not able to have that work during navigation of a course though

  • I've attempted to use them but encountered two issues

    1. Then PB don't seem to update on the device. I have a support call logged for this at the moment.

    2. When creating segments the accuracy is not great you can't zoom in as far as you would like (compared to strava) and also when you think you've set the segment you want sometimes it adjusts the start finish by a few hundred metres. So if you want to accurately map the bottom and top of a hill it's more luck than judgement.

  • Damn, looks like I am stuck with Strava for now and the clumsy implementation when using these while navigating a course.

  • If you are creating segments firstly check that you unit is set to use 1 second recording and not smart recording. If it is using smart recording it will create a data point once every 3 or 4 seconds based on how the data is changing. This could be why you are seeing the start/end points move when you are creating segments as it has to move them to the nearest actual data point.

  • Thanks for the tip I will check that. I wasn’t even aware it was a setting choice on the edge 530. What are the pros/cons of the different setting?

  • The default setting of smart recording is really a throw back to when available storage was limited. It creates smaller activity files.

One second recording drops an entry in the file every second as opposed to around every 3 to 4 seconds that is typically used by smart recording. It results in bigger files, but gives more data points for creating segments and also for matching against them.

If you use a power meter the Edge will automatically use 1 second recording irrespective of the setting.

  • Hi

I have noticed that the segment leaderboards dont automatically sync back to the device. The PB that is stored on my device is nowhere near the best result on a few segments. Even if I connect to garmin express and sync still nothing changes.

Another issue is that if you create a new segment the system does not look back into your activity history to populate your leaderboard. I understand that this might be resource hungry for Garmin but it is really annoying if you have lots of data and want it to reflect in a newly created segment.

  • Unfortunately that is by design in terms of only using future activities for leaderboard data.

  • We found a way on another thread to manually refresh activity by activity but not suitable for mass updates.

bigger annoyance is the failure to sync PB updates back to the device.
