3 hour map update?!?

When I connected my 530 to my PC Garmin Express told me there is a Routable Map update 2020.10 and it says it will take 2 hours 54 minutes. Is that true? Is it download time, install time? The info says the file is 6+ gigabytes. If there isn't that much room available on my 530 will the old map be removed first to free up space?

  • It includes an estimate of the download time and install time. It will remove the older version of the map to do the install.

  • I think Garmin uses a slow transfer rate deliberately. That might not be a bad idea because it wouldn't slow other things down (which people would complain about).

I just let it download (it doesn't seem to matter if it takes awhile).

It seems it doesn't take as long as it says anyway.

  • I did a map update this morning and it has taken about an hour so far. Says it has another 6 minutes and I will go for a ride as soon as it is finished. Ha.

  • On a 1030+. The 530 shouldn't be that different.

The initial estimate was 5+ hours but settled down quickly to about 40 minutes. There wasn’t any real delay in Express starting to show a moving progress bar.

Garmin express shows 2 rates during the transfer. These stabilized fairly quickly at the following (after starting lower).

Download rate: 36 MB/s (this is the rate to your computer)
Transfer Rate: 13 MB/s (this is the rate from your computer to the device)

Clearly, the download ends before the transfer ends (but it’s doing both at the same time).

It took 36 minutes to complete.

13 files with a total of 23.2 GB were updated.

This was for the NA and Europe map. (The 1030 is generally only going to be updating one map unless you have a card and paid for additional maps.)

Maximum USB 2.0 transfer rate is 60 MB/s (480 Mbps).

The network speed was about 250 Mb/sec.
