Turn by Turn help on courses with Edge 530

I need some help with Turn by Turn on the Garmin.

I must be missing something as I have received some GPX files for a Fondo's / Sportive which whether I put them into Garmin Connect or Komoot they do not have turn by turn.

Just blank waypoints every half k or so which becomes super annoying on the journey.

Is the a good practice guide to get a route onto the 530 from a GPX, that it will do the turn by turn on?

Thanks

  • Thanks I just added the RWGPS as a wired file and will test on Sunday. TBH it all looks the same on the device so I think the sync-ing is the same for Garmin Connect, Komoot (although I know this doesnt do TBT), and RWGPS. Just something weird but I will keep trying to fix!

I know how to turn on and of the guidance as if I go off course it sometime will not re route or give silly responses!

  • "Komoot (although I know this doesnt do TBT)".

    This is certainly not true.

The device itself creates the TBT from the track file. As long as it's a track file, it doesn't matter where it comes from.

"I know how to turn on and of the guidance as if I go off course it sometime will not re route or give silly responses!"

That's something else. That is the "recalculate on/prompt/off" option. "Turn guidance" is a separate thing (that is gonna say :"Turn Guidance".

Make sure you load the route when you are at the start of it. If you "navigate to start", reload it again.

  • Oh per https://support.komoot.com/hc/en-us/articles/360023082291-Using-komoot-on-a-Garmin-device

Does the Edge / my watch offer turn-by-turn navigation if I use komoot routes?

At the moment, the Edge offers a full navigation only for routes created on the device itself. If you use external routes, such as the ones created on komoot, you will only see the line and can follow it. You can reach a full navigation, if you let the device recalculate the tour. This starts automatically, when you start the Tour and it takes a few minutes. What happens then, is that the route receives the navigation info from your Garmin device. However, mind that it's possible that the course of the route might be adjusted a bit in this case.
This is not possible on the watches, they cannot display acoustic signals in addition to the line.
Maybe I don't leave it long enough to recalculate but I haven't seen it work to verify Just for me it hasn't worked!
  • That doesn't make any sense.

"At the moment, the Edge offers a full navigation only for routes created on the device itself."

This is, like, really wrong. The Edges that use maps have provided "full navigation" for course files for years!

Maybe, they are talking about "course points". You won't get those with GPX, whatever the source. At least for now, mucking with Komoot is just going to confuse you. (I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Komoot.)

==>> If you have a track file (GPX, TCX. or FIT) and "turn guidance" enabled, you'll get the "big white arrows".

"Maybe I don't leave it long enough to recalculate but I haven't seen it work to verify Just for me it hasn't worked!"

If you start the course at the start of it and have "turn guidance" enabled, the device will show "Calculating #%". If you aren't seeing that, you probably don't have "turn guidance" enabled.

==>> Verify that "Turn Guidance" is enabled (it will say "Turn Guidance).

==>> Make sure you load the route when you are at the start of it. If you "navigate to start", reload it again when you arrive at the start. If you are at/near the start and it asks you to "navigate to start" don't do that.

When I got an 800 years ago, I created a route right out my door to see how it wored.

    =====================

The 530 works fine. It seems there is just a step you are missing. Once that is resolved, you'll likely not really have any issues any more. Though, it's possible that there's something wrong with your particular unit.

Ideally, you'd have a mate that uses this or any other Garmin with maps check it out.

  • Thanks for all your help, I tried this on Sunday. So I "navigate to start" from the car park to the start line Turn by Turn (TBT) working as intended. I got to the start line, the course loaded and the screens for navigation were as above. The start was actually on a track so I did a u-turn for about 25m and got the off course warning. I then turned back and the course recalculated and every thing was magic for the 50 mile course.

Still not sure what the initial unit issue is when loading the course but not the TBT but honestly glad it worked for my sportive this weekend!

  • You don't have to be at the start point of the course to use the course. The device will (should) pick up the course of you start after the start point. It will even pick up the course in the middle. If you move in the reverse direction on a track, you'll get the "off course" warning.

I think your issue was with using "navigate to start". Choosing "navigate to start" doesn't load the course. It calculates a completely separate course to the start and does nothing else.

Once you are at the start, you have to load the course (again) to be able to use that course for navigation.

  • Sorry to resurrect an old thread however I have properly fixed this now (only 3 months of time to waste!, but what are you going to do in lockdown!)

The reason for the turn by turn directions is that the the Edge is mapping you as if you are off road.

I live near some major A roads in the UK which were still on the map hence why there was partial working turn by turn.

So in short this was down to the missing European maps issue here:

    https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-explore/168178/missing-european-maps

However the update to Garmin Express (GE) did not fix this, as GE kept crashing when preparing the maps for "preparing device for map update"

I had to mount the Garmin 530 as a drive delete the maps as suggest from a Windows machine as suggested in the work around in the first link above:

    gmapbamp

    gmapdem

    gmapprom

Then when I reconnected to GE the maps updated and the routing from ridewithgps, komoot and Garmin Connect as all working as intended finally!

Thank you to the community for helping me, hopefully this helps other people!
