Downloading a GPX file wirelessly?

I'm wondering if there are any Garmin head units (thinking the new Edge 530 specifically) onto which you could download a course without a computer. I'm about to embark on a bicycle tour and if I end up deciding to change my route during the tour, I want to know if there's a way for me to get a new route (made on Google Maps or Ride w GPS on my phone) onto my Garmin?

Thanks for your help!

  • It's a bit clunky but you can import the gpx into the Garmin Connect website (Training -> Courses - > Import). Then open the app, browse to Courses, select the course and Send to Device.

  • There's no need to use the website. You can simply open the GPX with Garmin Connect Mobile to import the course, and send it you your device. (at least on Android)

  • Ah, thanks. Hadn't tried it that way. Much simpler Thumbsup.

  • No convenient way of getting a course from Google.

There are a few options for getting a course from RWPGS.

The newer Garmins let you run apps on them like a smartphone.

    1- RWGPS has an app.

    2- I wrote an app (and a widget). https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/search?q=grouteloader&device=&deviceLimit=&appType=&sort=&start=0&count=30

The best way to use either of these might be to pin the course you are interested-in in RWGPS.

Widgets are apps that can be used while recording an activity. Regular apps can't be used while recording an activity.

  • So if you have a mobile you can download the GPX into Komoot and then use that but you don't get turn by turn. I use Garmin connect and then pull down the GPX via mobile. I am having issues with Turn by turn on a another thread but once that is fixed again it should work as you want.

  • Your two problems might have the same cause. You might be less frustrated if you deal with one issue at a time,

These devices use "track" files, which are many coordinate points that follow the curves and turns of the path you want to follow.

You can get "track" files as FIT, TCX, or GPX.

Some GPX files are not "track" files, which means they won't work on the Edges.

To get "turn guidance" (this is the term Garmin uses for the "big white arrows" turn instructions), you need an enabled "routable" map, a track file, and have "turn guidance" enabled.

Lots of people use Komoot without issues. I doubt the issue is Komoot.

There's something else going on in your case. It might be the file you are loading. It might be how your device is configured. It might be something else. We don't have enough info to figure that out.

    =====================

If your routes/courses are on RWGPS, it's easy to wirelessly-download courses that will work (assuming there's not some other issue with your device). Many people do this.

  • Is there a way to turn a track file into a routable file?

  • No, that isn't something that "make sense". The map has to have routing information.

The devices only use track files.

Basically, with "turn guidance", the devices "walk" the track and pick the roads on the map that the track appears to follow. That's what creates the "big white arrows".

You need to try loading a course that starts where you start it.
