when I turn on Edge screen is black with message"Updating the GPS Firmware"  with spinning wheel at bottom. after a while Edge goes to sleep. when I turn back on same message appears.  no way to get past it and it seems no update is actually happening

  • Before it goes to sleep try a hard power down. Hold the power button down for 15 seconds or more until the unit shutdowns. Then try powering it up again and see if the message is gone.

I have more of less the same issue. My Edge 530 updates the GPS firmware whilst riding (not a very handy situation...) and gets stuck at 62%. The only way to get it out of the update is a hard power down. Afterwards it doesn't respond to my sensors and it has GPS version 0.0. Obviously it cannot find satellites without firmware so you're lost in the middle of nowhere without direction and have to rely on good old fashioned road signs. Connecting to Express does not help, factory default does not help. So now i'm back to my Forerunner 230 and the Edge is on its way to the bin. Or does anyone has a solution..?

  • The same problem here .

@Garmin: What do we have to do to get the Edge 530 back into action?

  • You can delete the software update and then see if a fresh download fixes it.

The software for the GPS is located in the Garmin\RemoteSW folder and is called 006B310700.GCD

  • I also had the same issue. All was sorted out however when I connected the Edge 530 back to my pc and ran Garmin Express. Express picked up that there were still updates and then downloaded them to the 530 where they installed.

I've sent it back to Garmin under guarantee. They couldn't fix it and replaced it with a new one...

Yes, you are right. It's a major update. Hence has to connect to PC Garmin Express to update. Problem solved.

I had the same issue, and updating via PC (Garmin Express) resolved the issue.
