GPS version 2.80 live

My Edge 530 auto-updated itself to GPS version 2.80 a few days ago, I doubt it brings any improvement as no-one has bothered posting about it here so I assume Strava live segments will still drop out.

Will let you know if I notice any difference.

  • Refresh almanac data to prevent long fix times.

  • What does that mean? that was the change log for GPS 2.70 this is GPS 2.80

  • The almanac data contains the approximate orbital parameters and service status of the satellites. Basically for a given timestamp it gives the receiver an idea of what satellites should be in sight so that it doesn't have to do a full search, speeding up the acquisition.

Usually the almanac is considered good for 30 days (when updated offline) but receivers also get the same data from the satellites (but for a shorter time span if I recall correctly).

  • Strava live segments mostly drop out if the cyclist who originally created the segment had a poor GPS signal.

Zoom in on it in Strava and see how accurately it follows the road.

If it’s not very accurate, ask Strava to clean it up and then re sync with your Garmin.

It’s likely to be that over a Garmin problem.

  • It's not just one segment that this happens it's many and my old 520 does not drop out on them but my 530 does.
Would be better if Garmin fixes the 530 instead of trying to fix all the segments.
