Minimum temperature of operation

Hi,

This morning, I think I reached that point.

During my ride, my Edge went off. I tried to turn it back on a few times, but everytimes it went off again.

Back inside, I waited a few minutes and it was working fine again.

Outside, it was -18C or 0F, not taking in account the wind.

Do anyone experienced that?

  • I have not experienced that, but I have only had my device a short time and have not tried using it at that low temperature.

The manual says the operating temperature is -20C to 60C (-4F to 140F)

Out of curiosity, how long into the ride? The Edge 530 is actually really good at low temperatures but that's compared to phones which can die within 30 minutes of being outside at under 5°C. Sure, you were technically at operating temperature, but that doesn't mean there won't be any limitations.
Keep in mind that the device is fully exposed, unlike a watch or a phone which is typically touching your body and getting some worth. Even lights are better off because they're generating at least some heat.

  • So I just experienced this exact same thing on my bike commute this morning.  Start of ride the Edge 530 was reporting 15F, ambient temperature of my garage where it was stored with the bikes.  Around 15 minutes in and at 5F recorded temp, the Edge shut down.  Repeated attempts to restart would get me back to my ride pauses screen, then it would shut down on its own.  At one point it stayed on and I pressed start/stop to continue the activity tracking, but then it shut down again.  Displayed temp was 3F at that point.  I noticed that during boot up screen it said battery was 70%, but during the time when it let me continue tracking it said battery level was 0%.  I suspect this is a clue

  • Was out this morning at about -18C and 6:47 into my ride my Edge 530 froze up. It was still on and I could still see the screen but none of the information would update and could not change screens or turn it off. It also lost connection with the Garmin remote and I could not get them to reconnect. I was able to turn it off and back on after it had warmed up. went right to the screen to save and I only got the first 6 minutes of my ride.

  • I first posted on this thread when my Edge 530 was brand new 3 years ago. I can confirm that it does not perform at low temperature. I use a different device if ambient temperature is <20F, that seems to be about where the shut downs will start to occur.
