Activities - downloaded from my Edges 530 to my computer appear as PDF files but my ADOBE software cannot open the files

Hi all - I am a new user so be gentle. When I plug my Garmin Edge 530 into my computer to charge it and download my activities, the activities appear as PDF files in the Garmin/Activities folder but I cannot open the files. My PDF software (latest version of Acrobat DC) cannot open the files. The on screen message says the file is either not supported or is damaged. I have tried changing the file type from .fit to .pdf but get the same message. My computer is compatible with the device. Can someone please let me know what I am doing wrong?

Thanks

TonyW

  • What do you mean by the activities appear as PDF files? The activity files are FIT files and can not be read with Acrobat. You are not doing anything wrong.

  • I am referring to the data in the Garmin/Activities folder on my computer. The default file type is PDF. Each file name consists of the date and time with the suffix .fit. as you say, the default file type should therefore by .fit which my computer does not recognise. I shall see what I can find on the internet and at Garmin.

  • You won't be able to open .FIT files by default. You will need to either upload the data to a service which can interpret .FIT files, e.g. - Garmin Connect, Endomondo, Strava, Ride with GPS, etc. Or you will need to use special software to open the .FIT files on your computer - e.g. Garmin Basecamp.

  • Kiridmi - thank you for that information. I have since downloaded Garmin Connect to my computer and can see the content of the files via that medium. my problem is that I simply want to line up the basic data generated during each ride (which is the same route every day) such as time, distance, average speed, top speed, heart rate stats etc in a spread sheet for easy comparison. I may have to extract it from Garmin Connect manually unless there is an export function. Thanks again.
