Edge 530 with Wahoo Kickr & Stages Power Meter

Hi Everyone

I have a Speed Concept with a stages crank based power meter.

Over the winter I'm using the bike on a Wahoo Kickr smart trainer that also has a power meter.

on my Edge 530 I'd like to take power & cadence input from the stages power meter and speed / distance from the Wahoo Kickr smart trainer.

Could anyone offer any guidance on how to configure this setup please.

  • I don't have experience with the Kickr, but what happens if you pair all the devices to your device, and just switch off the ones you don't want?

Avoid pairing Bluetooth devices, as sometimes these can aggregate multiple sensors into one.

  • There are various options, in general this is called powermatch. Now you need to decide whether the trainer (Kickr) is paired with your external Stages power meter and controlled by it, or does this happen externally in some other platform.

Option 1: In the Wahoo app sensor page for the Kickr, turn on the option "Control via external ANT+ power meter" and enter the ANT+ id of the power meter (you can find this by pairing to your edge 530 and viewing the sensor details page, then disable or remove the power meter from the Edge 530 list of sensors). With this setup, your Kickr will pair directly with your Stages power meter, your power meter will NOT be visible as a separate sensor in your Edge. The Kickr will report the power meter's power as its own power and will use it control its resistance when in Erg mode. The advantage I've read about, though no first hand knowledge, is that the control loop is shorter and more responsive since it is all in the trainer. The disadvantage is that I have heard, again anecdotally, that there can be connection/pairing problems between the trainer and the ANT+ power meter and those can be tough to diagnose since you won't have any UI in your Edge 530 or in the Wahoo app to check those. Note that your trainer has to be in Erg mode for this to work, which it should be if doing a structured workout either via your Edge 530 or some other phone or other device.

Option 2: Use a ConnectIQ app in the Edge 530 or some other app on your phone where the both the power meter AND the Kickr are paired as sensors, to the Edge 530 in the first case and to your phone in the second case. The app in this case has to support powermatch itself. I use the Xert player on my iPhone and it has the option to select a power source (in your case the Stages meter) that is different from the smart trainer it is paired with. In this case the Xert app uses the power source to control the trainer depending on whether the power reading is higher or lower than the target power in the structured workout the app is running. The advantage is you can debug the connection problems directly in whichever app you're using. I know TrainerRoad also supports this. The details should be documented by each app separately, the details vary a little bit based on whether doing it in a connectIQ app for the platform in question directly on the Edge 530 or some other device.

    Hope this helps.

  • Also in option 2, I run the workout in my phone but I also simultaneously record it as an internal ride in my Edge 530. The advantage is the Edge keeps track of metrics like exercise load and recovery time and FTP etc. My power meter and trainer and both paired to the Edge using ANT+ and to my phone using Bluetooth at the same time. So I get the control and workout advice from Xert and the other metrics from the Edge 530. So I get the dvantage of both platforms.
