Edge 530 display auto switches to a map, I don't think I like this

Hello.  I just started using an Edge 530 after many years of using an Edge 510.  On my first ride out last night, activity profile set on MOUNTAIN, I noticed that the display would automatically switch to a map screen.  Not the normal map screen, but more of a zoomed-out map screen showing the trail I was on, display seemed fixed (no zoom option) with north at the top.  Usually this only happened when I was stopped.  Sometimes it would stay on this screen and sometimes it would toggle between my Data Screen 1 and this map, and sometimes it would return to the normal Screen 1 once I started moving again.  It seems I could return to my data screen by pressing the back button.  Try as I might I could not find a setting or a description of why the display keeps switching to this map screen.  I'm not sure I like it and want that off.  Can anyone help?  Thanks.

  • A quick read through this DC Rainmaker review has taught we way more about my device than several days of use and reads through the manuals!

  • Thank you! I'll give it a read.

    Gamrin's devices where I live cost about 2x that of those in Europe, then shipped across the world, and having paid import duties. Had I bought the device locally I would have returned it already... seems like its a device made by software engineers that haven't ever ridden a bicycle or used the products they program

  • Hi Martin, thanks again for your input on this thread.  I've been using a 510 for many years and have used the Strava Live Segments from it's birth.  I'm not sure of your experience with them before your 530, but your description of their behavior seems like working as intended.  What I have found is that I need to manage my list of starred segments within Strava with how my Garmin will use them in mind.  In other words, don't have too many.  Additionally, I even have most of them disabled within my Garmin so that it doesn't track my progress on them.  I only want a select few to get tracked.

    The auto pop up and switching to the map screen has always been the default behavior on my old Edge 510 and this seems to be how the 530 behaves as well.  I guess I'm just used to it, although I have not yet done a tracked live segment on my 530.  Likely because I have managed my starred favorites as described above.

  • Glad to have helped.

    I get that the Live Segments feature is working as intended, and that it's been the case for a few years or since its inception.

    I just find the implementation illogical, at least as a new Garmin Edge user.
    It's ironic there being an option in the Segments Data page to turn off "pop up" and "show  page" just for another page to pop up in its place. If I don't want this page to pop up, why would I want another page to pop up then, in this case the navigation page, which conveniently cannot be disabled?

    The idea and concept of Live segments are fine for me, and would love it to be discrete; ie, not take me off my main data screen, and just show the small pop up at the bottom saying "upcoming segment...", and "go". Exactly like how it is if one one dismissed all the page pop ups and returns the the original data screen... a small green "GO" appears. Thats a cool implementation. I just don't want to take a hand off my bar to dismiss these screens. Why can Garmin implement a discrete jump notification on any page you're on, but not offer the same feature for Live Segments when my settings are clearly set to disable "pop-up on approach"

    Maybe it's just me... but I can't use it the way it's implemented which is a great shame...

    If I were to configure the function settings of the device;

    1) If Segments are ON in the activity profile, then Garmin Segments and Strava live segments are on and active, meaning a notification or pop ups when approaching, starting and ending a segment based on settings below

    2) If "pop-up on approach"  is disabled in the Segments Data Page, then the page doesn't change from my current data screen to the Segments page on approaching a nearby segment. If one is approaching a segment and wants to chase it one can then select the segment data screen if desired.

    3) If "Show Screen" is turned off, the entire Segment screen isn't available. ie, only notifications or small banners to let you know you are approaching, starting, and have ended a segment.

  • I've started having that now. My activity type is set to Road Bike. I've disabled segment view/page. However, my 530 started switching to a map randomly informing me about turns but I'm not even navigating. I just wanted to have a random ride I wanted to choose my turns. I'm not sure it started doing that. Tbh that drives me crazy. I'd like to switch to that view manually when I want. Can I turn off any auto switches completely?
