Activity profiles: Configure screens - easier way than on device?

Ok, n00b to Garmin cycling computers. Used to track rides via Strava on the Apple Watch and/or iPhone, but always found it didn’t auto-stop nicely when walking or stationary, and always forgot to unpause when i’d manually paused.

However, i’ve found configuring activity profiles and the screens I want to be a complete pain in the rear end.

The amount of time needed to click through, find what you want, name, and so on is just soul sucking. It’s hard to know what is where, what it will show like, and so on.

I would love a way to make creating and maintaining activity profiles much faster.

However, reading these forums (albeit 4yr old posts) there does not seem to be a way to do this via either Garmin’s desktop or mobile apps.

Is it still correct that there’s no easier way to do this (without getting or borrowing a touchscreen-based device and transferring the profiles), or is there an app, service, or 3rd party tool i’m missing which will make this most frustrating part of the Garmin experience easy.

Thanks in advance.

  • Pro tip - What i do is cut pieces of paper with all the fields i think would be of value and arrange them the way i like it then set it up on the Garmins.

It's pretty much a one time thing - not something you have to do every day. The more you use it the more you'll be familiar with how to operate the 530.

You can also set different profiles with different screen setups.

If the ease of setting up screens is important to you then the Wahoos are probably what you should have bought.

  • As far as I know there is no easier way.

My forerunner 35 allows data screen configuration on the GarminConnect app, but not the new edge computers. A surprise that this feature hasn't been developed, since Wahoo has it, and it works well.

Yes, it's a good idea to write down or draw what you want on which page, as mentioned above, but gosh Garmin it's not 2009!

Is there a feature request page Garmin has?

  • Not really a one time thing unfortunately.  Factory resets are still needed sometimes when the unit loses the plot.  So another pro tip is to take and keep screen shots of your nicely set up pages so you can remember what goes where after a reset.

  • I just keep a backup of my settings. Simple copy/paste when the device is attached as mass storage on the computer...
