Strava live segments do not work when navigating a route.

Menu -> Navigation -> Courses, select, then Ride.

...Riding without live segments...

Then select Cancel route and the segments start to work. What's wrong?

  • When you use the navigate function to follow a course, Strava segments do not work.

Only Garmin Segments work in parallel to navigation.

Strave segments work when navigation is off. They also work if you start a track with the Strava IQ App on the Edge.

  • Not quite true. Strava segments will work when following a course provided that the course was created on Strava and loaded to the Edge using the Strava Route app.

  • It's a real shame it's 2020 and they haven't been able to get a key feature working - follow a route AND display segments.

The only way it currently works is if you use Strava Routes to load the route on the device.

  • I agree that one can hardly imagine a technical reason why it should not be feasible to use Strava segments when a course navigation was started with the Edge (w/o Strava Routes app)... My Edge even shows the Strava segments on the map during navigation, so it's hard to understand this limitation.

  • I fully agree! Garmin could simply add the segments to the course file on the fly while loading a course from any source.  The same issue exist when using the Garmin segments.

  • I am in the same boat as everybody else - mainly because I am coming to the 530 from the Wahoo side which allows me to use Strava Live Segments at my hearts content (even during a structured workout). I understand that they need to be baked into the queue sheet of the current route which appears to be an issue that Wahoo seems to be on top off and Garmin cannot or does not want to tackle.

I do all of my planning in komoot and this issue forces me to export the komoot route to the Strava Route Importer (which is in perpetual beta) and then use the inferior Strava CIQ app to get the route onto my device. At least this workaround - while clumsy - sort of works.

Funny things is, that once the route is imported via the Strava CIQ app onto the device KOM changes and such seem to be reflected when navigating. So there is some back and forth on the device between the static route database and the dynamic Live Segment information.

  • I ran into the same problem this week on My Edge 1030. But I actually did load my Strava route and segments did not activate and I did ride a few segments. I did switch to main screens while route was running in the background as I wanted all my data as I traveled the route.

    Any suggestions anyone?

I discovered on second use.  Segment has to be a "starred" segment to display on 530 during route.

  • You mean a route loaded from Strava IQ App? As even 'starred' Strava segments don't work for me while following a route. Disappointing this doesn't even work with the recent additional of the ability to ride a Strava 'starred' route, directly from the Garmin edge course menu (without the use of the Strava IQ app).

I am so confused as to how we are supposed to be using Strava routes on the 530. The ConnectIQ app wasn’t working, then was working, but routes weren’t coming over correctly. My elevation data is all messed up (not fixed in the beta), and segments don’t work if you bring over the route via Garmin Connect? I honestly just don’t understand. What should we be doing and is this stuff being worked on at all??
