Less obtrusive Live Segments implementation?

Hi all.

I'm new to a EDGE 530 - my first edge - and I have a question about Garmin's Live Segment implementation and if there is any way to make it less invasive???

I like the idea of live segments, but I cannot figure out how to go on a ride without my entire computer being taken over by the Segment page. Even when Segment data screen is switched off, I still get a pop up of an approaching segment and then the Navigation screen appears.

What I would ideally like is using my preferred data screen while riding, getting a subtle pop-up of approaching segment, with the current "GO" banner pop-up when it's time to go.... but have the computer stay on my preferred Data Screen. I can always easily and quickly manually navigate to the segment page when I'm interested in chasing a segment.

Am I missing something obvious or is the implementation of Segments just annoying like this? I know where my favourite segments are, but I don't always feel like chasing my PR.

Thanks,

Martin

  • Could not agree more with you, On my Fenix and my old forerunner 935 you had the option of cancelling a segment before it started by 1 press of a button, on the edge, and this is my first bike computer that is not a watch, you can't you can stop a segment, but it takes 3 or 4 button presses which is dangerous to do while moving, Garmin support tell me that I should remove segments before my ride, what a load of rubbish that is, you don't know which ones to go for sometimes until your out, crazy and dangerous, please add ability to cancel segments with 1 button push like on the watches.

Yeah, I don't expect Garmin to do much about this problem but I hope to be wrong about this...

I bought the EDGE 530 for two reasons... First, battery life, and second, Strava Live segments.

For my latest rides I've now disabled segments completely since the device is annoying me more than helping me chase segments. Pity.

Oh, and on shorter segments, the start and end positions are not accurate, which results in incorrect Segment times. A recent segment I chased my Edge noted a 1:05min Segment time, while the Strava result was 1:10min. Quite the error. Its not like I was going fast either. I'm not experiencing any GPS inaccuracies, and I'm finding a greater route tracing accuracy of the claimed 3 meter accuracy.

  • For more accurate segment times on Strava make sure your device is set to using 1 second recording. If it is set to smart recording then Strava has fewer data points to use and then can result in the type of time difference you are seeing.

  • Thanks, but I'm not sure how your reply was intended to help, but it's not applicable to the original question.
    It is on 1sec recording.

(I changed my email address for my Garmin Connect account and now I can't access my original profile)

  • Perhaps @Garmin-Matthew can chime in???

I cannot use Live Segments with this extremely annoying implementation. Sometimes I feel like throwing the device to the ground, because I ride past the proximity of a segment, or worse yet near where multiple segments fork off, and every few seconds I get alters that either alerts me to how far away the upcoming segments is, or that I'm "off course".  Rage  And every time I need to dismiss the navigation map page, which means taking my eyes off the trail and a hand off the handle bar. #saferiding

Is there any way to make a feature request?

  • And... Garmin Support is still not available and so far has never worked across two browsers
