Activity not saved correctly

This past weekend I:

  1. turned on the Edge 530,
  2. selected the activity screen,
  3. then selected Road.  So now I am on the first data screen of the activity.
  4. I then pressed the power button, which turned off the screen and (I assume) put the device in sleep mode.
  5. A few hours later I got to my bike and pressed the power button.  The Edge turned on and showed the same activity screen, as I expected.
  6. I then pressed the activity start button and did my ride.
  7. At the end of it, I pressed the activity start button again to end my ride,
  8. and hit the power key again to put the device to sleep.
  9. I finished saving the activity later that evening and synced with my phone.

Now for the weird part.  The activity showed up in Garmin Connect with the correct numbers for elapsed and moving time, but all the graphs showed empty or straight line data for the couple of hours between when I first put the device to sleep, and when I started the activity (between #4 and 5).  It's as if it wrote a data point to the fit file at the time when I first went to the screen, and then started recording properly when I hit start.  During the ride, the device seemed to work flawlessly.  I got my 5 mile auto laps, and all the data as expected.  I also recorded the activity on an FR920XT, and the data matched almost exactly.

Below is a snippet of the activity to show what I mean.

Has anyone seen this before?  I guess I should not leave the device on the activity data screen until I'm ready to ride?
