Reversing Course on device or smartphone

Hello, when I was about to start a course but I wanted to ride it in the other opposite direction, is it possible to reverse that course by only using your GPS device? I couldn't find it. Then I searched in the Garmin Connect app, and also didn't find it. So you have to use your PC to reserve your course?

  • If everything else fails , then make the course visible on the map, and give it at bright colour, then just look at the map. In this activity se the photo where the course is RED and a starred segment  nearby shows in GREN  . https://www.strava.com/activities/5742490445  and how to www8.garmin.com/.../GUID-A90DA84C-389E-4DFA-9A85-CD698C4B4E63.html

  • Wow, it's been two years, and they still haven't fixed it?  I came from the Wahoo world, and it was very easy to reverse.  Not only was it easy, but I could keep all the data from the previous ride.  That way, I could see the total miles, total everything.  Someone here said that Garmin reads these forums to get feedback.  Maybe they're waiting for a Wahoo engineer to switch companies and get the job done?

So my good news is I don't have to mess with Garmin Connect to reverse it.  I have BikeMap routing software that will do it for me.  I used the original route (that's what BikeMap and Wahoo call it) as a template and simply hit the Reverse Route button.  Presto it's done.  I name all my routes with XX- where XX are numbers so I can see them sequentially.  In the reverse course, I named it 06R-, easily recognizable.

So my problem is solved in a weird unconventional way.  I guess that's how the Garmin non-aviation system engineers operate.

  • I do this all the time, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

  • This thread is about doing it on the Garmin device, not phone or computer.

  • Indeed it's easy doing it on computer. However, mainly on the device, in the middle of a track, it should be easy, too.

Talking about that garmin connect track editor, i would say it's a shame also. Easy to revert a track, ok. But difficult to edit it and impossible to open many at the same time, cut, join, revert, analyze, etc. Garmin has born as THE GPS company for personal use, outdoor sports and adventure, be it in the land, in the water or in the air. Is that too difficult for them to make a decent and simple GPX editor for bike and running tracks? I don't think so.

  • You're totally correct.  Garmin is known for high quality products.  Recently I was cycling on an urban trail when I saw a guy coming toward me bare chested wearing a heart rate monitor. I decided to stop him and ask him what brand it was.  He smugly raised his chin and said "I only use Garmin. They make the best equipment in the world.?"  I responded "Apparently you don't use cycling computers" and went on my way.  My equipment used to be a Wahoio Roam and Wahoo HRM, which I beat to death the hardware through extensive use.  Now it's the ergonomically non-friendly 530.  I decided to buy the CooSpo arm band HRM, which connected right up with ANT+.  It has been an extremely reliable HRM and is powered by a dedicated source that is magnetically held in place.  I prefer this method over the Wahoo 2032 battery.  A weakness in the Wahoo HRM is its battery compartment.  The round cover is extremely hard to remove and easy to damage. It finally cracked and rendered it useless. Same thing with the Wahoo RPM sensor. The cover is now held in place with electrical tape wrapped around it and the hub.  Looks funky but nobody notices.

Lessons learned.  If you want an easy to use good computer, buy Wahoo.  If you want long lasting sensors, buy magnetically coupled or easy to remove battery sensors. Exceptions may apply.

Curious - what's your reason for going from the Roam to the 530? Did u not familiarize yourself with this forum before getting the 530 ?

Agree 100% - i never thought about it but yes - reversing the route is a really useful feature. Wahoo has the 'Retrace back to start' - damn that's really good.

  • Correct.  I did not familiarize myself with the 530 via this forum.  I bought the Roam, because the sales pitch was that map updates were free. Somewhere I read that Garmin update maps cost pesos.  Also, the display's top plastic layer became unglued, and I glued it back on.  It looked somewhat funky.  So I bought the Garmin and used it heavily until the battery went dead, and it was out of warranty.

So I bought the 530 thinking Garmin's great reputation would produce a high quality product with sufficient features to do anything I wanted, which wasn't that much.  I mostly follow urban trails, streets and roads with some MBT thrown in.  I also bought Garmin's battery unit that bolts right up to the Edge with clean contact point through a hole in the handlebar mount. Since then, that combo has worked beautifully by providing the Edge with external power and keeping its battery at 100%.  The external battery never goes below 50%.

One thing that really irks me is I can't kill everything by turning the Edge off.  Instead, I have to stop the activity timer, save the ride, etc. etc. then hit the power button and answer a question. It's just a hassle if I have to quickly go in, take a shower and powder up for a date.

  • Searched today on my Garmin 530 for reversing the route, being completely confident that the device has this feature. Was baffled that this everyday feature isn't there, especially because all of Garmin's competitors have it. It's really in high demand, hopefully a Garmin engineer can comment on a time plan for it or why it just won't be implemented.
