Fenix v 530 Edge

Got a couple of questions for 530 owners, firstly is it possible to ride a ride outside then ride it indoors and the edge unit will control the wahoo snap turbo to recreate said route ?, also the maps, can you put more detailed maps on it, I use a fenix 5x plus, and the maps are poor, if I am to get better maps, may as well have bigger screen as in 530 edge, I have no details on my maps when Mountain biking, nothing, to get the detail I either have to buy from garmin or talkytoaster, not sure which way to go, and lastly I have never owned an Edge unit, always used watches, forerunner, and fenix, easy to move around on bikes, and keep all my metrics together so to speak, but am thinking of ditching the fenix, and going for the edge 530, good idea or not ? Also I would like to create routes, but still have Strava segments, and turn by turn, strava on my 5x plus does not do this any other way ?

  • Garmin Edge units come with Garmin's cycling maps.  They are based on OSM and have the same sort of detail.  If you wish you can use other maps with any Garmin device with mapping for free: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/08/how-to-install-free-maps-on-your-garmin-edge.html

A cycle specific head unit is better than a watch in the regard that it is easier to see maps/metrics whenever you want as the screen is suitably sized for viewing on a bike and it is always in front of you.

If you want Strava segments and navigation you will need a suitable Edge unit or the Wahoo equivalents.

Yes, it works fine on my wahoo kicker

  • Thank you, but the osm maps, just don't have enough detail of my area, agree with you on screen size, I have strava segments and they work great on the fenix, also I climb pro a year ago, but have never used it., navigation should work well on the fenix, if the maps showed enough detail.

  • How do you find the rides when you recreate them indoors, realistic to what they are outdoors , I just want an alternative to zwifting before paying up for the winter, and if I could ride some of my outdoor rides inside, then that would be great.

    Very interesting topic!

Cons of the Fenix as 530 replacement:

    - Screen Size is kinda fixed using a Fenix 6X (1.4")

    - maps can be fixed

    - mounting (there are quick release mounts)

Would there be any other argument not taking a 6X instead of a 530?
