Is it possible to have segments in my 530 without Strava Premium. I think one cannot access segments without paying for a strava subscriptions (happy to be proven wrong). So is there another way to download or create my own segments and have it on my 530 ?

Great. I need an idiot's guide to getting the Garmin Connect's segments then. Did i understand it correctly that the Garmin Connect Segment can only be created from an existing ride data?

And that we can't plan or draw the route in Garmin Connect and make it a segment?

These Garmin Connect Segments.......how does a route become a segment - does it need any special or unique characteristic?

I can't find segments in Garmin Connect. Help says

    1. Log in to Garmin Connect
    2. Add a Courses widget from menu icon (  three lines in upper left corner)

Where is the courses widget ??????? is it in invisible ink? Do i have to change my monitor color to see it - RGB to Gaming mode?

  • Three lines in the upper left corner is in the mobile app - you can find Courses under the Training subheading (stopwatch icon).

In the web version, Courses can also be found under the Training subheading.

  • You can also mark segments on Strava as favorites and they will be synced to your Edge.

OK - found the segment and went well. I have a few questions more:

    - when the timings shows +1.30.....it means i'm slower by 1.30 minutes compared to the leader?

    - Can i change the leader - the time the segment is based on?

The garmin website states the following:

Select Leaderboard to view the ride times and average speeds for the segment leader, group leader or challenger, your personal best time and average speed, and other riders (if applicable).

TIP: You can select a leaderboard entry to change your segment race goal.

But i can't find a way to change the leader to another time

    - Segments Segment Option - Auto Select Effort - what does this do?

I like that with Garmin you can have segments for free via Garmin Connect. No need to pay membership to Strava (Premium) to get segments.

Yes - found it. Thank-you for pointing it out.

Found a segment i was interested in and it worked brilliantly on the 530. Nice one Garmin. I think segment riding is quite interesting. And also useful. Without segments i always wondered just how fit or fast I am today on this ride compared to my rides on the other days - now i have factual numbers to show.

Segments are in the training tab in the menu

You can create segments by opening one of your activity, under the graphs you have a segment tab, click it then lick "create segment"

Then you'll use the segment creator which is not that bad.

After that it will appear in the training/segment tab and you can sync it to you garmin.
