No GPS -> Ride type Indoor

Hi,

I have a Garmin Edge 530 that I use for commuting to work and for weekend tours and training.

For commuting I use a dedicated activity profile with ride type "Commuting", and I switch off GPS on that profile, because I have a speed sensor and use the same route every day. This should save some battery, and more importantly I don't need the Garmin to record the same route every day and to automatically upload many copies of it to my Komoot profile.

This works fine, except for the fact, that after every ride before saving the tour, the device overrides the Ride type with "Indoor (GPS off)", just because GPS is switched off. Is there any way to avoid this? Is it the same with any Garmin? I know I could change the ride type back with the buttons, but I would hate to do this every single time.

This is pretty annoying. I would assume that athletes who use the Garmin for Indoor rides can (and will) set up a dedicated Indoor profile anyway (with GPS switched off and ride type Indoor and all their fancy training settings). So why overwriting and forcing this on all the people who use their Garmin for commuting with a speed sensor?

If there is no way to change this, is it possible to use GPS, but not to record GPS data or at least not to upload the data to Komoot after the ride only for that profile?

Thanks!

  • I don't know about the head unit, but if you have the new Garmin Hub based speed sensor, I understand that it can record commute type rides internally without all the GPS features, and upload at a later date. Might be an option for you

Thanks! I have one of those. I'll check if this offers a handy solution for me.

However, my ride to work is 20km one way and this training for me, so I still want to use my head unit to monitor live data. If I could just press "save" after the ride, everything would be perfect except for that unnecessary ride type overwrite. So I am looking for a solution where I don't have to press a couple buttons twice a day to change the ride type back or to manually upload data later.
