Big difference between Connect iOs version and Connect browser version (GPS data)

Why I’m seeing such a big difference in GPS draw > Garmin Connect iOs app vs Garmin Connect internet browser version?
Here’s two pictures from the same spot and from the same workout. iOS app's gps line is all over the place, but the browser version is much better. Just like it was in iOS app with my 820. This is only happening with 530.
This happens also in the forest where there are no marked roads. So this isn’t about smoothing by map data.
Why is the Connect iOs app drawing so badly, because it seems there might be much better data available?

  • It is likely down sampling the data when it is plotting the data on the phone to reduce the amount of data it has to transfer.

  • That would be one explanation, but why isn't my 820 or Edge 25 do that?

How 530's gps tracking is shown in phone app gives very bad feeling of gps quality. I almost returned my 530 before I noticed that gps tracking in browser version is much more accurate. First I thoght that the new gps chip in 530 is working very badly.
(Both 530 and Carmin Connect app are up to date).

  • Are you using Smart sampling or 1 second sampling for data collection?

My GPS trace on both iOS app and Safari browser on my iPad are identical and very smooth in both cases.

  • I'm using Smart sampling. Should't the result be the same anyway (like yours)? Odd thing this is only happening with 530.

  • The sampling rate doesn’t explain the difference between your two apps, but perhaps 1 second sampling allows for a more accurate trace.

I’m using 1 second as I have a power meter, here is a trace from today from the GC app on my iPad, as close to perfect as I could hope for. The trace to the lower right is up and back on the same road.

  • ^ Smooth, just like mine in browser version. I have to try 'one second' next time. It's not the solution for a difference but battery life seems to be so good in 530 that using one second isn't a problem.

  • Smart recording will not really save any battery. In fact the unit has to more calculations to work out what records to keep.

Smart recording is a throw back to when storage space was limited. This is no longer the case.

  • Throw back?  Why would they add this option then on their latest units and why is it on by default? Wouldn't it just save many problems and support  calls with a unit which seems to be riddled with problems if Garmin just got rid of this silly recording method. I have real beef with smart recording as it is the only recording method of my "throw back" Edge 25 which is only 24 months old - oh and I remember they marketed it as a "new' feature when the unit was released.  Everyone on the Edge 25 forum hated the feature and many said they would of never purchased the unit if they knew it was the only recording method.

  • New Feature? - I had that on my Edge 500 in 2011 or something like that!

  • Today I tried the same route with 1 second activated. No difference in iOS app. Route still cuts corners like in my original picture. For some reason 530 is not sending all data into my iOS Connect app. But it's just a line drawing what differs. All data in numbers are equal to Connect browser version.
