Riding Indoors using 530 to ride Course from Garmin Connect

I want to use my brand new Garmin 530 to ride a downloaded course that I have created on Garmin Connect (read Strava route (from race organisers), downloaded and then uploaded to Garmin Connect) for a triathlon bike course which I am too far away to practice on in the flesh.

Maybe I have missed something with the setup /  screens on the head units, As I have synced my Garmin 530 to my Tacx Neo 2 (as an indoor trainer on the indoor profile as ANT+) and loaded the course. The trainer appears to be following (due to change in resistance). However I cannot see a course route on the maps as it defaults to my local GPS position, not a false rider on the course with the real map or turn by turn etc. Also there is no time / distance remaining. Climbs appear and maybe I am reading this page wrong? I know this as there is a Climbpro climb which is early in the race which appears but I get no other feedback / course information to be viewed on the head unit.

I have looked at Shane Miller / GPLamas video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_X82njeO8I)  which is for the garmin 520, but it does not seem to help. I have also seen this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soXbz_BnOR8&t=255s) from Smart bike trainers but again it does not seem to help. Has anyone got this to work properly on the 530?  / Advice in order to see the course? / distance / average time remaining etc?

It seems like you have to use other products for this to work well! See (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JBf0xfSfAc ) This is not something I want to do and is one of the reasons I purchased the Garmin 530.

I want to also sync my trainer back to Zwift via Apple TV (in order to keep the mileage count going up) on BLE but when I do this, the Garmin 530 seems to lose the control over the trainer and Zwift takes over. This would be a bonus but if I have to use just the head unit then fair enough

Any help would be much appreciated.

  • To avoid Zwift taking over control of the resistance, pair the Neo on Zwift as a power meter, not as a trainer.

  • I have a Tacx Vortex smart trainer and I wasn't aware that what you are trying to do is possible.  I usually download the tcx file via TacX Training app and follow it that way.  My garmin would of course track my speed and cadence though this isn't necessary with the TacX app.   The TacX app applies the trainer's brake to simulate climbs but it has a direct BTE connection to the trainer.

Do you mean that the 530/830 can connect directly to the trainer and simulate a ride somehow?

  • Yes I do and if you look at the first youtube link above. It shows you how to do it. It isn't very good hence my post above.

  • Thanks for this and the late reply but this works, also with the latest firmware update v5. You can now see the course on the map. It isn't great and you really need to know the course to know where you are on it but it is significantly better. Garmin keep the updates coming.
