Personally, I have set up a separate profile called "Training" with the screens set up just the way I want them for structured training, (like you, I like to see HR and cadence) and just ignore Garmin…

+1. Totally agree with that.
Add a new Data Screen and add the following data fields from Workout group(scroll down to bottom of data field list): Duration, Target and Workout Comparison. That'll give you the base Workout screen elements that you can then edit as desired. I added Cadence and HR. I had to play around with the layout options a bit to figure out optimal placement and what it would let me do.
Can anyone tell me if the Edge 530 will show what's coming next in your workout?
My Edge 520 kind of has that but it's in very small type at the top of the screen and half the time it just says "repeat steps 3-5" or something like that.
The Stages computer has exactly what I'd like to see, but Stages won't automatically sync workouts from Training Peaks.

The Training Screen should only be at the start. If you scroll to your normal screens, it should stay there, even if you start the next lap.
The Training Screen does re-appear if you Stop your ride. There is also a pop-up banner at the start of each workout step/lap with the details of that step, but it should stay on your selected screen.
