On-device course being altered from planned course

Coming from an Edge 520, I've never had a device with 'proper' on-device navigation. Previously, I would load in a tcx course from RideWithGPS and the Edge 520 would route me to my destination - no issues.

Nowadays, I use Garmin Connect for planning routes, mainly for the convenience of the wireless transfer.

On the 530, when I load in a course, it frequently deviates from what I planned. It seems to think it knows better than me. I've attached an example where I've marked where it tried to send me up a gated, private road.

Has anyone else experienced this? Am I missing a setting somewhere? All I want it to do is faithfully follow what I've planned. At the moment, the 530 actually feels like a step backwards from the 520 in this respect!

PS I'm wondering if this has something to do with re-routing. Maybe if it briefly thinks I'm off-course does it completely re-calculate the route, ignoring the course I've entered?
