Installing better maps than the stock Garmin maps

I want to install more detail maps than the stock maps delivered with the 830, But I find all the info out there very confusing, but lets assume I have the maps that I want from:

http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl

I read in another thread that if you install any new maps you should disable the stock Garmin ones. However which maps. On my device (out of the box) I have:

  1. INTL Standard Basemap, NR
  2. Garmin Cycle Map EU North East 2019.10
  3. Garmin Cycle Map EU South West 2019.10
  4. Garmin DEM Map EU 2017.20
  5. Garmin Geocode Map EU

So now I install:

Openfietsmap Lite (GBR_29-07-2019)

What should I disable? I guess I should disable 2 and 3, but what about 1,4 and 5? I'm concerned that I will mess up the elevations and T by T instructions..

Interestingly I discovered you can have different maps enabled in different profiles. This means if you copy an existing profile and then enable/disable the maps appropriately you can switch between the maps as you desire, including mid ride

  •  2 and 3.

The issue is overlapping routing data. The other maps don't have routing data.

The DEM map has elevation but it's only used when generating alternative routes on the device.

Anyhow, the DEM map can be used with any map.

The DEM data is not used for loaded courses (the elevation data has to be in the file).

I don't know if the elevation info is added to the routes calculated on the device (I suspect it isn't).

What about 1 and 5? Are those important when we use OSM maps?

  • 1 is a low detail basemap of the entire world which you see when you zoom out far enough.  Having it enabled doesn't affect other maps.

5 is a location map for POI I think.  It is up to you whether you want it enabled or not.
