Edge 530 and Pixel 3 XL connectivity problems

I have had an Edge 530 for about a month now and continue to have terrible, persistent problems with Bluetooth connectivity to my Pixel 3 XL. The behavior I experience is that it connects and disconnects every few minutes on a ride. Even if I make the effort before a ride to reboot the phone, reboot the Garmin, open Connect, and make sure the phone connects to the Garmin, it will still drop the connection within 10 minutes of riding.

This means I (1) get interrupted by notifications on the Garmin telling me the phone connected / disconnected, (2) only receive message notifications intermittently, and most crucially, (3) I frequently have problems with data fields from ConnectIQ apps (such as Xert).

The Pixel 3XL is a flagship phone, both devices are less than a year old, and I have updated to latest firmware on both, so I have no idea why this would be the case. 

Is this a common issue? I upgraded to the 530 specifically for ConnectIQ. Thanks.
