calorie count wrong with hrm paired

Cal count 60% lower when hrm active on regular clocked rides. eg 380 paired v 940 nott paired, on both new 530 and 2018 edge explore both with up to date firmware. Tested over several rides / routes.

Temparsture also wildly out eg showing 31C this morning when actually 20C

Makes you wonder what other numbers are todally wrong !!??

  • When you have a heart rate monitor paired, it's using heart rate to track calories. Without it, it's just speed and time since that's all it has to work with. They won't match up well. The heart rate monitor will give you more accurate data, but that's really still just an estimate.

It's normal for the temp to be a bit out - it is, after all, actually warmer on the road - but that's more than you should be seeing by a fair bit. Perhaps someone else has some tips to help on the temp. Mine is pretty close to what the weather reports say, maybe 2 or 3 degrees max out.

Having the same issue here.... Me and my mates do similar activities and some of them have Garmin and some Wahoo devices and my calories are always 30-50% lower than theirs... we have similar weight being me heavier if anything and pretty much the same height... We are all using heart rate straps as well so.... no idea what's odd here.

Even going for a very easy ride with my girlfriend who doesn't have a bike computer but a Fitbit watch and a hear rate strap, her device shows twice as much calories compared to what my Garmin says...

  • Without a HR strap the calorie number will just be a wild guess and should be ignored.  With a HR strap the Garmin calorie number should be closer to the true value but cannot be taken that seriously.  The only way to get a good calorie number is to use a power meter.

Differences between Wahoo and Garmin calorie numbers - they use different algorithms.  Neither can be trusted without a power meter.  I wouldn't trust a Fitbit's calorie numbers at all.  It is very likely to heavily over estimate.

Temperature.  The temperature reported in weather forecasts is the shade temperature.  If your unit is in the full sunshine it is likely to record a higher temperature.  It can take a little while before the temperature reading equalises with the environment as well.
