Wrong remaining distance calculation, changes towards the end of the course

When navigating a course I have the "Distance to Destination" data field displayed and I noticed that the numbers don't make sense:

1. the kilometres are decreasing much faster than they should

2. towards the end of the ride, say 20km to go, the unit will suddenly seem to change its mind and alternatively display another remaining distance to destination value, say 30km

3. this "new" value makes more sense than the previous ones, but the two will continue to alternate on the display, but getting closer to each other until they match perfectly at 0 when I finally arrive

The speed and distance for the activity seems otherwise correct.

Is that a GPS issue? (I was using the GPS + GLONASS setting)

  • The activity appears to follow the route/track very closely. There doesn't seem to be any odd data on the "stick" part of the "lollipop".

If it thought you where on the departing leg (when returning), the remaining distance would have changed to something larger than about 250 km.

I suspect it gets confused about legs of opposite directions if the device somehow thinks** you've changed directions.

(** maybe, due to GPS variability or bad reception.)

  • I'm not seeing anything wrong with the data at first pass.

I've ridden plenty of lollipop (frying pan) loops and have not seen this issue, but I have not ridden anything as long as this.

If you ever see something like this again I would recommend dropping a lap marker in the data and use the screen capture feature on the Edge to take some screen shots.

I'm going take a more detailed look at the data now.

  • Thanks.  Much appreciated for your help.  ill try that next time.  the next couple of rides are a loop rather than lollipop so might be about a month before I have similiar.  I might design some small training rides to see if i can replicate it on a  smaller scale.
