Has anyone had any issues with rerouting whilst following a route?

Went out for a ride in an unfamiliar area and missed a turn (didn't get a turn alert, just an off course notification) - thought I'd carry on and let it reroute and just follow that........

The unit then spent best part of two hours trying to send me down unpaved farm tracks and grassed walking routes that weren't suitable for a road bike - I had road cycling profile with it locked to roads and avoiding unpaved roads and trails so no idea why it ignored this, ended up doing an extra 40 miles!

Lost confidence using it as a route device and will switch back to paper for next time I'm riding somewhere I don't know.

    I found that with Lock On Road my cursor preferred to stick to the road even though i was riding on a bike trail next to the road - i have now disabled Lock On Road and I think that's the preferable option. Otherwise iti'll be confusing to have the cursor inexplicably not where you think you are.

    Sorry for the late reply - yes, I mean TBT. Doesn't work. Sends me right, no matter which exit I am supposed to take... utter rubbish.Ticket opened with support, we'll see what happens.

    As far as "road" goes, the bike trail is a road.

    It's going to pick the nearest "road".

    I think people are better-off not using "lock on road' because it obscures what is really happening.

    mine does this - it drives me crazy and it's dangerous when in unknown area (you know - when u would typically need this feature to work)

    Found similar issue today. My planned route had a strange right turn that basically went through various residential streets before rejoining ahead, so I carried on. The  Edge meanwhile wanted me to divert back to the original turn until right at the point we rejoined the route. Wondered if there was a setting I could change ....

    It would be interesting to know where that was.

    There isn't any setting.

    Unless it's a "avoid road type" issue.

    The device should pick up the route further down the course.

    this was the crazy routing.. yellow was the pre-planned route, I was rolling the black line, and the rerouting was wanting me to follow yellow to get back on track. The whole thing was over no more than 200meters or so.

    It's kind of an odd route (as it is shown). The yellow path does an odd backtrack (it appears to end too).

    The OSM map data looks OK (looking at it quickly).

    The purple was odd, not sure why it was drawn that way in the first place. The yellow started at the top, after I missed the right turn, did a backtrack and attempted to rejoin the people at the turn I missed!

    The purple line was the "pre-planned" course.

    The yellow line was the recalculation back to the planned course.

    The Garmin recalculation strongly prefers getting you back to the course (it seems from my observations).

    The Garmins take a while to give-up doing that.

    For some rides, one is required to stay on the course. It's possible that's why the route recalculation wants to get you back on the course.

    I would have expected you got a "U-turn request" for a bit. I'm not sure why it ended up doing the triangle back (it's not shorter).

    One thing that might sometimes explain odd results like this is that the computers are slow.  The might not have the capacity to do an exhaustive analysis of the optimal route back.

    I don't typically use the recalculation. I keep an eye the map (especially, when navigation is important), which provides a backup when odd things happen.

    I wonder if your expectations are based on experience with a car navigation unit.

    Often, car and cycling navigation have contrary goals.

    Car navigation typically uses the fastest and shortest route, sometimes preferring roads that cyclists can't use (or would strong object to using).

    Also, if the route calculated for driving is a bit less than optimal, you might not even notice.
