My Garmin 530 has big disc image files. What is that?

I just bought the south America cycling map and added to my Garmin. I checked the "garmin" folder and there are several "disc image files" on it, so now I have little space. Is that possible to uninstall the US map? Can I delete those image files?

  • They aren't "disc image files'. They are map files.

    You could delete the North American map files, but Garmin Express will probably want to reinstall them.

  • Hi dpawlyk. Thanks for your help. The only thing I find weird is that there are 5 or 6 of those "disc image files" and they all have coded names instead of "US map", "South America map", etc, so I don't know which one is the US one to delete

  • The map data is split into three files.

    Gmapprom -> image and routing.

    Gc -> geocoded info (address lookup).

    DEM -> elevation data.

    There are other small maps files (timezones basemap, etc).

    If people want maps for a place they vacationing at, they might be better off using the free openstreetmap maps that are available free. Since they can download a map for just the region they need (a much smaller file) and they can always get current maps. People don't usually need a whole continent and you have to re-buy the maps from Garmin to get updates (the Garmin Cycle Maps are based on openstreetmap data)..
