FTP auto calculation without power?

I just purchased the Vector 3 pedals and installed them a couple of days ago. Having done 2 rides since installing them I was interested to see how my FTP & W/kg measured. I was surprised to see that garmin had already collected FTP data across my garmin watches and now also the 530 prior to installing the Vector 3 pedals.

Also, after having installed the Vector 3 pedals, it still reports the same FTP & W/kg (as before) for both my rides. I'm hoping this is mainly because I have not ridden hard enough for 20 consecutive minutes for it to actually detect and update my real FTP.

Question is, how does Garmin measure FTP & W/kg when I have no power meter? Anyone care to explain this to me? Slight smile

  • The 530 has just imported the figure from Garmin Connect.

Perhaps go back through your Garmin FTP history, and identify dates when it changed? (There's a graph in GCM which should allow you to do this fairly easily).

When you do generate enough data (either through 20 minutes, the guided FTP test, or just generating enough below and above threshold data through normal riding), it will display the new FTP, and give you a chance to accept or decline the new figure.
