Grit - community sourcing feature?

Since Grit is supposed to be a function of the trail independent of the rider, it seems like it'd be possible and useful to include it in the heatmap data for trails, such that when one creates a course the projected Grit rating would be visible.

@garmin - sound feasible?

Is there a better way to suggest features to garmin other than random forum posts?

  • Sounds like a very good idea Muscle

    Does anybody know how exactly is this metric measured? I assumed it's based on accelorometer data, but today I rode an easy flat singletrack full of roots and both Grit and Flow remained at 0.

  • If both were zero where you using a profile that did not have the ride type set MTB. Those metrics only work on profile that have the ride type set to MTB.

    Grit uses elevation gain and twists and turns to compute a value.

    Flow uses accelorometer data to detect unnecessary braking.

    Oh WOW! Totally missed that you have to have a MTB profile active. That's kinda bad for mixed riding. So the grit does not take into account how bumpy the surface is?

    And if I may ask, does setting the profile as MTB affect navigation? There's a separate setting in navigation, so I'd assume the type of profile you use doesn't matter.

  • Grit from my understand really has little if anything to do with roughness, it is more a measure of how tough it is based on elevation change and tightness of turns.

    Yes, each profile allows you select what maps to use and what navigation and routing options to use.

    For example even though you set the ride type to MTB to enable grit/flow you disable the trailforks map and set navigation to road.
