Strava Live Segments not downloading to device

I haven't really investigated this too much (as I've only done a few rides), but had a couple of instances of Strava Live Segments not being downloaded to the device.

With the previous Garmin Edge 820, when I loaded a Strava Route (from the Strava Routes App) it would automatically include any Live Segments which would have also been download to the device and this seemed to work pretty flawlessly

With the 530, on the page that lists all the Strava Live Segments (during a ride) I can see the segment, but on occasion the actual segment has not been downloaded (i.e. its not in the Training > Strava Live Segments menu) and hence does not pop up the segment page during a ride.

Anyone else noticed this? I know I can just double check its all downloaded correctly before I start my ride - but with the 820 I could trust it would do it all automatically.

  • It would appear that anything with a negative average grade is not downloading. Is there a setting for this somewhere?

  • This is a Strava limitation imposed by their newer API's that prevent downhill segments being transferred through their newer API's

  • I could've sworn this was working on my previous 820. Is there any work around for this that anyone knows of?

  • It did work until Strava changed their API's. If you sync the Edge via Garmin Express I think that still uses the old API's so will pull over any stared segments. That way the segments will be there on your Edge if a course needs them, even if they are not transferred over by the course loading process.

  • I've been testing some more this morning and things do feel a bit flakier than with my old 820. I deleted all segments (deleted all files in Segments and Segmentslist folders) and unstarred all segments in Strava. I have disconnected my 530 from the PC.

Now when I star a large negative gradient segment in Strava and sync via Garmin Connect App it IS downloading it. Has something changed since yesterday?

I've now tried to star some further segments (both positive and negative) and unstar some others and sync via Garmin Connect App and nothing! Can't get anything further to sync. This has definitely got worse since he 820

Maybe they only sync every so often?

I've plugged the 530 back in to the PC and nothing happens. the new segments haven't downloaded and the unstarred one didn't delete - so my segments appear to now be completely out of sync with Strava

  • As mentioned earlier the APIs used by GCM and GE are different. GCM uses the new Strava API's and they prevent downloading downhill segments. GE uses the old API's and this can still access downhill segments. I'm not sure for how long as Strava may close that off as technically they no longer support real-time use of downhill segments.

How the syncing process works is a little unclear to me. The process is asynchronous. Garmin sends a request that Strava then fulfills and returns the data at some later time. In Garmin Connect switching to Garmin Segments and then back to Strava segments should then force a sync.
