Firstbeat powered insights on the Garmin Edge 530 and Garmin Edge 830 - Q&A

Hey folks,

Big day for cycling enthusiasts.

I'm going to try something new and carve out a little space to proactively share and answer any questions about Firstbeat's advanced performance analytics onboard the newly announced Garmin Edge 530 and Garmin Edge 830. From a 'performance feature' perspective the 530 and 830 are identical, so no need to have separate conversations about each model.

In terms of stuff to be excited about and look forward to... these are the big 2 ones in my opinion. There's obviously some very cool stuff going on with both these new devices, but I'm only talking about Firstbeat related things.

Training Load Balance: https://www.firstbeat.com/en/consumer-feature/training-load-balance/

Heat and Altitude Acclim: https://www.firstbeat.com/en/consumer-feature/heat-and-altitude-acclimatization/

There's also a new label data field (https://www.firstbeat.com/en/consumer-feature/workout-labels/) that summarizes the primary training benefit of your finished ride and a something that I know people have been asking for around here for a while - for the first time you will be able to see the specific Training Load contribution of individual workouts. So, that's something to be super excited about - and a good example of delivering information that folks have been requesting.

Actually, if you scroll down on this page (https://www.firstbeat.com/en/consumer-product/garmin/edge-530/) there is a decent introduction to some more of the new things going on with some additional context.

Other cools stuff to be aware of is the introduction of stuff like Training Status, Training Load, Aerobic and Anaerobic Training Effects, FTP and Performance Condition… all of which have become pretty standard on Garmin's higher-end Forerunner and Fenix watches but weren't widely available (or even invented) back in 2015 when the Garmin Edge 520 and Edge 820 were introduced.

Looks like some good in-depth reviews are already up… so enjoy those… and if you have any questions feel free to ask me and I'll answer anything that I can. ;-) I'll be sure to check in regularly over the next couple weeks.

All the best,
Herman
  • Former Member Point taken, but honestly, the Garmin forum notification system isn't the most reliable. The new software seems like a massive improvement over the old, but still today I came back from vacation and it said there weren't any notifications. Anyways, moving on. ;-)

As far as I know, you 'shouldn't' have two different Training Status feedback panels, one from your Edge and one from your Forerunner. They should both feed into a single Training Load, and that Training Load is interpreted into Training Status by analyzing trends in your Training Load in light of trends in your VO2max (cardiorespiratory/aerobic fitness level).

There are, of course, different VO2max values from running and cycling activities. This is true of both direct and indirect assessment of VO2max, meaning your VO2max will be slightly different even in a laboratory assessment depending on whether your test is conducted on a treadmill or an exercise bike.

There is a logical determination of whether your Running or Cycling VO2max is 'more reliable' for the Training Status analysis. So, as far as I know, it should be giving you one or the other, but not both at the same time. I could be wrong, but I assume this is something that's will be fixed. Browsing the forum it does look like there's been some issues with TrueUp between these devices - but that's the limit of my own insight.

  • I think by "Record HRV" it simply means that the HRV data is stored in the .fit file.

This is important if you are exporting your .fit files and feeding them into another program/platform for further analysis. For example, Firstbeat Sports Monitor is our professional-grade training software for elite sports teams. With that platform, you can record training sessions directly with a single long-range receiver and multiple paired HR belts. That works great for team training sessions, but you can also upload a .fit file recorded with a Garmin device and have it analyzed and stored in the system.

You don't need "Record HRV" active on your device to benefit from Firstbeat analysis of HRV during the training activities you record with your Garmin device... as it is only telling your device whether to include HRV data in the .fit file. Back in the day (like only 3-5 years ago) being able to make those files extremely small was VERY important.
