Garmin GSC-10 Speed/Kadence problems

Hi,

I've been having some trouble with the Edge 520 and the GSC-10 Speed/Kadence sensor not displaying/sending the correct values.

I've been writing with Garmin support and today I got the answer that it is NOT compatible with the Edge 520 - what????
It have always been the best way of getting speed and cadence from a magnet device and now it's not possible - they are just referring me to the new separate motion detection sensors...

Did any of you try the GSC-10 in conjunction with the Edge 520 and can confirm this?

Best Regards
Thomas
  • I've been using the GSC-10 for the better part of a month with no issues.
  • The GSC-10 doesn't have an actual battery monitor, but one indication that the battery is getting low is that the speed sensor starts to become intermittent (while cadence reporting is still accurate). You might try replacing the battery, and re-pairing with the GSC-10 after that.
  • Hi ThomasSig,

I was also able to pair the GSC-10 without any issues.

What Garmin support team told you it was incompatible?

For the ride that you posted the speed is coming from the GPS. There is no pairing to the GSC-10. The only sensors are a power meter and a HRM.

When searching for the GSC-10 and you searching for a speed/cadence sensor?
  • I haven't completely sorted this but something to be aware of. The 520 will give a choice to select one if two speed sensors are found. But if there is a speed sensor and a GCS10 it will choose one or the other without any prompts. Once it selects one it will not find the other type. Even if the selected is deleted it won't find the other type until the power is cycled.
Edit: This pertains to finding sensors that are already in the sensor pool.

The magnet is mounted correctly and was working just fine on the FR920XT.
Your varying speed problem really sounds like a sensor trigger problem. If the magnet is aligned the other possibility is a weak battery. Can you do a test ride with both the FR920XT and the 520?

    Hi,

It did pair fine and was fitted with a brand new battery.
But when the ride started it showed wrong speed, no speed and wrong speed delayed. With no sense of logic.
I stopped, removed the pairing and started a new ride.

One thing that comes to mind after was that I used the HRM-Run that day and as discussed in another thread, it resulted in wrong HRM data and I think that this might have had an influence with the wrong data from the GSC-10.

Regarding the answer from Garmin Support, it was from the Danish subsidiary.
I have attached a screenshot of the mail, but unfortunately it's in Danish.
But it says that the Garmin Edge 520 and GSC-10 is not compatible and they refer to the motion detection sensors.

I'm not able to test on the GSC-10, I got so annoyed on the units in relation to the response from the support that I sold both of them.
Now I get speed from GPS only and cadence from my power meter.
But actually It's just sitting on the desk for now - until a fix for the HRM-Run is out.

I'm pretty annoyed on the unit and the quality of Garmin software/test department.
  • I have a GSC-10 on my bike which is working fine with my Edge 500 but refuses to connect with my Edge 520.

    Any advice?
I posted this earlier combined with something else so to be sure you don't miss it.

I have to bikes in use - MTB and Road both equipped with GSC-10 Sensors.

If you do the first pairing you have to select "Speed & Cadence" sensors.

I daily have my MTB bike in use to get home from the office and additionally i wear the HRM-Run belt. And yes I have the problem with the dropping heart rate to 63 but speed and cadence are displyed correctly...

This is my ride from yesterday.... https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/905694327

I'll try pairing them again, last time I tried all I got was the 'buffering' signal for about 15 minutes before I gave up.

The HRM which was supplied with the 500 works fine with the 520.
