Edge 25 and Speed Sensor setup issues

what is the proper way to get the magnetless speed sensor to work correctly?
I installed the sensor, my Edge 25 detects it right way, but it doesnt seem to do anything. All the time while riding in the forest my speed will drop to 0.0, and my mileage is way off at the end. If I lift the front of my bike and spin the tire it doesnt display any speed numbers.

My buddy has a 520 with the same sensor and his works perfect. If he spins his front tire the speed shows up and at the end of a ride he might show "12.2 miles" where as my unit will show "6.6miles".

Any tips or suggestions? I'm new to all this not sure what is wrong. Do I need to ride in the streets for a bit so the unit can calibrate properly? I dont see an option on the Edge 25 to manually put in tire size like the 520 has.

There was not new firmware update to fix issues. What you likely saw was a time zone map update. Most of the device got a new time zone map update after DST started.

When will it be fixed? It is producing very inaccurate data.

Since it is not picking up the speed sensor when you stop it take some time to auto stop and then takes a while before it auto resume.

I have been riding the same route for over 4 years and the reading is normally the same but today with this new garmin 25 it is 1/3 off with all the data.

Let me know when is the fix because then I can determine to return this item or not.

I am quite surprised you guys will be making this kind of mistake with all these years of bike cycle computer experience. Actually it is extremely frustrating especially I have been looking forward to ride with it.
  • Same here.
Is this going to get fix any time soon?

    continuing...

Just tested it and the speed sensor will not work in GPS mode.

Rode home in indoor mode and it worked fine. However, the reading still off because it doesn't pick up elevation from GPS so the reading are still off since there are some climbs in my journey.

Please fix this ASAP before I return it back to the shop.

I am stunned to this. No testing? Doesn't seem like there is quality control.
  • Pretty darn frustrating to continue having to use my cyclometer if I want accurate speed and distance data. Especially since I called Garmin in December and told them there was a problem and they told me there wasn't. ABout to tyhe point where I'm ready to send this unit back to Garmin. Does anyone know if the speed sensor works properly with the Edge 520? I guess I should get onto that section of forums and see if there's anything buggy with the 520 before I decide to switch to it.

It works with my garmin 800 and my colleagues 510. I am seriously surprised that something so fundamental they get it so long. AND WOW they have not fixed the problem since December or since launch?!!!!!

    Shocking. Beyond disgrace.

I am going to return mine back to Aldi tonight and I need to find alternative to find something other than Garmin.

Looking at Wahoo at the moment.

Or maybe I just stick with the 800 for another year until Wahoo matures.
  • Firmware 3.0 is out, did it solve the speed sensor issue??
    Im updating it tonight.

3.0 is out as of December and from what others reported in this thread, it did not solve this issue.

Guys, I am really glad you reported it here and I found your report. I was just about to buy the speed sensor specifically for my mountain biking. I have bad GPS reception when riding through dense forest with it's tree canopy and to my best knowledge GPS only measures "horizontal" speed and distance and does not account for slopes which I ride a lot. Speed sensor seemed natural solution. Now I see I need to wait for fix before I buy the sensor -> bump to Garmin.

    --------
Wishlist: let me put my heart rate BPM on page 1 or page 2 together with speed and cadence.
  • Glad I'm found this thread. Been in touch with Garmin about this and got rubbish advice back. Bought an Edge25 for Velodrome use. Small, discreet and easily mounted. No need for maps :)

Leave GPS on, as I used to with my 1000 and you get peaks and troughs as it switches between GPS signal and sensor. Turn off GPS and it's innacurate. (When done manually, I can calculate a top speed of 32mph - from Cadence of 135rpm and gearing of 82.6 gear inches. Edge 25 tells me it's 23mph peak with an average of 8mph which is not really an option on 42.5 degree banking). Riding in a straight line for a mile isn't really an option either. It was fine with my Edge 1000 and now it's not fine with the Edge 25.

    Come on Garmin!

Wish I had read this before buying the sensor......now I have the sensor and it doesnt work.....

Don't despair. The sensor works. Its 25 that's not working. You can always pair it with other garmins.

I am thinking about getting either the 520 or the 1000. Why did you try the 25 when you have the 1000?
