Emergency call

I recently upgraded my 130 to the plus. Today on a ride I went over a bridge, hit a bump, and suddenly a couple of tones played, and my phone called 911 by itself. ( so embarrassing)

I thought it was the Garmin safety feature, but I’m not sure now.   I disconnected the call before 911 answered, but they called me back several times and left a VM that I had to call and confirm I was ok. After doing that, my iPhone still had a red bar at the top and said SOS. And as I finished my ride, my husband was continually getting messages that I’d changed locations. When I finished, I finally figured out that I needed to touch the red bar, which took me to the emergency settings and turn the SOS off.

So was ghat a Garmin thing or an iPhone thing? And especially if it was an iPhone thing, why would it get triggered so easy? I’m always going over various bumps and I never stopped ( until I did to call them)

I sure don’t want that to happen again!!

  • The Edge 130 Plus has a feature called Incident Detection, which - when paired to a phone - allows the device to send text/email to emergency contacts, in case it detects an incident. I never used it, but it seems it can only send text or email messages, it cannot DIAL someone. In any case, you can quickly check whether it's active or not directly from the Edge, under the Safety & Tracking menu.

The iPhone also has an emergency call feature, but you need to hold down the buttons (side+volume) for that to happen. Note that some poorly-designed cases might make this easier than it should. It's very possible this is what happened, and it has nothing to do with the Edge.

    • I agree that it was probably the iPhone. I probably hit the bump just right and my phone probably jumped just right that it activated.
      It was very embarrassing!
