Edge 1050 – Auto-Start Not Working / No Way to Start Ride Manually

Hi everyone,

I just bought a brand-new Edge 1050 and I’m having a major issue getting an activity to start.

Here’s what happens:

  1. I select Road → then Road 2

  2. The next screen shows the date, speed, cadence, and time of day

  3. I read that the 1050 should auto-start around 6 mph and show a small arrow bar in the middle

  4. That arrow bar occasionally shows up while I’m riding, but pressing it or swiping left/right does nothing

  5. The device never starts recording the activity

  6. Tapping the middle of the screen brings up the third screen (settings/options), but still no Start button

  7. I already did a full reset and updated to the latest software

Even though the screen shows speed and cadence correctly, the ride will not start recording at all. This was my second ride with the unit, and I’ve had to rely on my watch because I simply can’t get the Edge 1050 to begin tracking.

Has anyone else run into this? Is there something I’m missing here?

Thanks in advance.

  • Make sure auto start is enabled... If not you will have to press the actual START/STOP button in the lower right part of the unit. And try reading the manual, that will tell you the same.

  • I had a similar issue today. With auto start enabled, the activity did not start. I tried it several times and restarted the device several times, with no avail. Then I disabled auto start and recording started on the map, but neither distance nor ascent were recorded. I stopped where I wanted to do some shopping and put my 1050 into my coat pocket. After shopping half an hour later, the recording worked with no problems. It seem that warming up the 1050 helped.

This could be an indication, that the 1050 still works unstable under cold weather conditions. I bought my 1050 last December and for the first weeks it was a very unstable device (reboots, recording problems and some more). When the weather became warmer, the problems gradually dispappeared and since seven months, I did not have severe problems with beta versions and released versions. Now when it is getting cold again, instability seems to reoccur.

It is too early to say that cold weather is definitely the cause, I will watch, how my 1050 works during the next weeks. If the instability continues, I think that there is strong evidence that it is related to cold weather and then Garmin has a major problem in my opinion, as I don't believe that it could be fixable with firmware. Garmin had about 1.5 years time to fix such issues.

Nevertheless, it is too early to make conclusions. I hope the experience I had today, will not happen again.
