[Bug] Touch screen stops working in middle of the ride

My Edge is on the latest FW 28.34, but it also happened with previous version at least once.

In the middle of longer rides the toch screen completely stops working. Means, the device does not react to any touch input anymore (like zooming the map, swiping data pages etc.).
It still reacts normally to the press of the HW buttons as well as to the SRAM AXS auxiliary buttons.

I waited up to an hour whilie I kept riding for the touch functionality to come back, but it does not recover on its own.
And just to make sure: The screen is NOT locked. In fact I can lock/unlock the screen back and forth using the power button, but this does not bring the touch function back to life.
As a side note: During the rides I saw this misbehavior there were lots of random touch events on the screen caused by either intense sweat or heavy rain. Not sure this played a role in provoking the error state.

Playing around with the device I discovered that there is one way to make the touch screen behave normal again:

  • pause the activity using the start button (don't save nor discard)
  • press the power button to put the device to sleep
  • press the power button again to wake the device up
  • At this point the touch screen is reacting again
  • press the start button to resume the ride

My naive assumption is that for some reason the touch driver runs into some error state it can't recover from. Putting the device to sleep followed by waking it up again might re-initialize the HW or driver so it works normally again. But well, what do I know.

  • I have seen that but only at the start of the ride. I follow course so the sw is probably kept bust by some function and is not responding to touch. in my case this happened twice and recovered on its own at maybe 15, 20 min. very annoying but iam sure garmin will fix sooner or later.
