Edge 1050 keeps restarting when navigating in battery saving mode

Hi Garmin,

My edge 1050 started to restart a few times mid ride when it was navigating a course and in battery saving mode. This issue persist until I had to stop navigating the course. Luckily i lost a few kilometers of data recording but the activity recording resumed upon restarts.

Please address this issue fast as I do ultra endurance races/event, 1000km or 1500km and battery saving mode is very crucial.

  • I have observed a similar issue with Battery Saver mode, but in my case the behavior is slightly different. Instead of restarting, the device simply freezes. The only way to recover is to hold the power button for 10-15 seconds until the ⏻ icon appears (at which point the device does nothing), and then hold the power button again to force a restart.

I rarely use Battery Saver mode, but during my last weekend ultra ride (600 km) I had to enable it and experienced repeated lock-ups. Several new factors were present in my setup, which had not been tested before on a long ride:

    • Voice prompts tried different languages (English/Spanish, male/female voices) with no difference

    • New data field: CoreTemp

    • Data fields previously used for over a year on my Edge 1040 and carried over to the 1050:

      • WindField

      • EdgeMapFields

      • Tempe Field

      • A custom CIQ data field I created with the SDK to display idle time (mValue = (info.elapsedTime - info.timerTime) / 1000.0f;)

The device is in Auto Pause mode, and I noticed that the lock-up happens as soon as I start moving again after Auto Pause disengages (e.g., after stopping at a traffic light).

It’s worth noting that you don’t need to ride 600 km to trigger this - I reproduced it on a short test ride while checking voice navigation prompts and experimenting with Battery Saver mode. I had never used this mode on my Edge 1040 Solar (battery life was sufficient), so this was my first time testing it.

My suspicion is that some CIQ data fields may not handle Auto Pause correctly under Battery Saver mode, possibly assuming that CIQ is always active and visible. I plan to create a bare-bones profile without CIQ fields to see if the issue still occurs. On my first test ride, the lock-up happened within the first 10-15 km.

If Garmin would like to contact me, I would be glad to provide additional feedback to help pinpoint the root cause.

  • That is a long existing bug, see the (closed) topic here: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1050/391862/strange-crash-last-ride-display-freeze/1901374

No reaction to the bug from Garmin. It was one of the main reasons for me to switch from the 1050 to the 1040, as battery life is crucial for some ultra-rides I do.

I hope Garmin will finally fix the bug soon, with the low battery life of the 850 (which should have more or less the same software), they need to get this right at some point.....

  • Ok, I also use Varia radar, so this is another variable to test.

  • I have been able to lock up device with just Varia 515, not a single CIQ fielf (created new profile from ROAD template). For lock up to happen, the device should be in auto-pause and the screen turned off by the Battery Saver, after that Varia incoming vehicle warning should trigger and that this combination will cause the device to freeze.

  • In my environment, the battery saver was working before fw11.24. . .

When you set up the battery saver, you will be asked at startup, "Do you want to disable the battery saver?" from the time of purchase.
