Software Idea: Auto-Pause and Auto-Start, but only after a manual start.

A feature I enjoy using is auto-pause and auto-start as most of my group rides take us along routes with stoplights, etc., and I don't want to have to remember to manually restart the device after it has been auto-paused.  However, there are times when I may be trying to load a route in a slow-moving car (in traffic, for example, when I am a passenger), or I may be riding to the start of a route and I do not yet want to start my timer.  In these cases my device will start, and I cannot continue to load a route.

What would be helpful is a toggle feature that allows you to use auto-pause and auto-start only after a manual start.  This would resolve the challenges I am having.

Thank you.

  • I have my 1050 on manual start and it auto pauses whenever I stop and then auto restarts when I'm moving.  On a recent ride, my Strava file shows 2:14:06 moving time and 2:24:42 elapsed time.  Lot's of stop signs on this route.  Works great.

  •  I would recommend reviewing this link to the owner's manual for the different timer start settings we have on the 1050.

You would have the option to set the timer start to Prompted, which will give you a visual indication that you are moving, but will not start an activity until you hit Start/Stop.

Separately but related, keeping the Auto Pause feature Enabled will allow it to automatically pause and start based on your movement, which can be set to a certain speed threshold or to when you stop moving completely. Information on this can be found here

  • It appears 516275 is missing the point of my issue or suggestion, and Garmin-Blake's suggestion doesn't incorporate what I am proposing/requesting.

"Prompted" will display a reminder to manually restart an activity.  This isn't what I want.  During a ride (after I start the actual route I'd like to ride) I'd like it to auto-start after the first auto-pause (but not before).  But I DO NOT want the auto-start to begin until I have actually manually started my route, not when I may be rolling to the starting line.  During a ride I don't want to be looking down at my Garmin since I am generally in a large group, and I need to keep my eyes focused on what is going on in front of me, not worrying about whether I have properly restarted my Garmin.  And I feel Garmin-Blake's response makes it clear he is failing to understand my real request.

What I want is an option so I can manually start my Garmin at the beginning of a ride (vs. having it auto start, or prompting me to hit start or prompting me again after an auto-pause).  This could be accomplished by including a toggle option within the Timer settings that allows you to auto-start ONLY after the device was manually started.

A side issue of the way it is now, if you have Live Tracking turned on and the device auto-starts and you don't want it to, your recipients get a bunch of email notifications that you have started your route.  Last night I got seven of them as my wife was trying to navigate to the start of a route but didn't want the device to start.  The "Prompted" option, if turned on, would still require manual intervention during a ride.

This feature request would not be at all difficult to program.

  • Actually, what you’re describing is already possible. Slight smile

If you don’t want the “Prompted” reminders, you can turn that off. There are three options for the timer start behavior:

    • Manual – You manually press the start/stop button to begin the activity timer.

    • Prompted – Shows a visual reminder when you reach the start notice speed.

    • Auto – Starts the activity timer automatically when you reach the start speed.

So if you select Manual and have Auto Pause enabled, your timer will pause when you stop and resume automatically when you start moving again — without you needing to press any buttons during the ride.
