Garmin 1050 and SRAM drive, gear is listed incorrectly as 1/12 after pauses in use (even minutes)

I have a Trek bike with a SRAM AXS electric derailleur and when linked to my prior Edge 530, it pretty much always showed me the correct gear on my data screen of the 530, even after pauses or powering off the unit for days.  When I turned the 530 on, it almost always was listed as gear 7 or 8 out of 12.

Since updating to the Edge 1050, when I turn on the 1050, it frequently reads as 1/12, and have to hit the Pod button up/down button to get the gear to register properly. (even when I move the bike or the pedals).

This also seems to happen, at times with the 1050, even after a brief pause in my ride, such as 5 minute water break or an extended period without a gear shift perhaps.

I checked the settings in my SRAM app and they seem to be set the same for my Edge 530 as they are for my Edge 1050.

I am not sure whether the issue is with the SRAM component or the 1050, but it did seem to function much more reliably with the 530 than with the newer 1050.

Any thoughts?

  • My setup is similar: 1050 and red axs. After Edge wakes up and AXS not activated by one rotate of cranks etc Edge shows Gears as -/- or empty graphics on custom data screen  But after AXS waked up immediately shows correct gear. See photos.

  • Not exactly what is happening with me....I think.

Waking the SRAM up by pedaling or moving the bike ONLY brings up gear 1/12 on my Garmin........(from the -/-)........it requires me to hit my Pod shifters up or down to resume the ACTUAL gear (6, 7, or 8/12 usually) on my Garmin 1050.

I had used my Garmin Edge 530 for several months and it seemed more what you are describing....moving the pedals or moving the bike wakes up the SRAM devices and sends the CORRECT gear info to the Garmin.   My settings in the AXS app seem to be the same....so I am not sure why it seems to be acting differently.

I guess it is not a major deal.......except the small drain on battery required to wake the POD shifter every time I bike (or when I pause for water or sometimes even when just riding.    Sometimes I go an entire ride without needing to change gears.

I just didn't understand why the 1050 device seems to be acting differently than it did on my 530 (the 530 acted as I would expect it to).

I spoke to Garmin (when I called about the blank screen problem described in another thread) and all they could say is that it may be a "feature" of the 1050......but I don't see how it could be a benefit to work the way it is on my device.

  • Yes, then Garmin's strange behavior. The control unit is located in the rear derailleur , and it stores all the information about the position of the front and rear derailleur, so there is no need to wake up the shifters... All the relevant information is available immediately. A very dubious “benefit”

  • The only thing I can think of otherwise.....is when I bought the 1050........I subsequently bought an SRAM Blip (a set of Blips, but only used one)....to mount on the handlebar, so that I could control the Edge 1050's Bell function with a single button push (Works great, btw!)........and in doing so....you. had to repair the Pod and Derailleur from scratch and perhaps something was amiss with the repairing process?  (or it now times out after a period of non-use?).    I guess if it continues, I can consider repairing the two, or have my Trek dealer try this at the next service, to see if it helps?

  • I didn't even think that these buttons can be put on the bell... as they say, all the most ingenious is simple )

  • Yep...it is the only reason that I bought the SRAM blips.  I believe in simplifying.....and figured that since I now had the 1050.....I could get rid of my spurcycle bell from my handlebar......but I did not like the default way to ring the bell, having to touch the screen, then aim for the button and hit it again.  All, a bit awkward while you are trying to avoid pedestrians and ring your bell.   The trick is you have to assign a custom configuration first using the SRAM app....and then the Garmin 1050 automatically prompts you to assign the bell from a list of choices as soon as you turn it on for the first time.   Works great! (at least so far). I do wish that there was some sort of volume adjustment though.  Would kind of like a slightly higher bell volume setting if possible.

  • Just an update....the last 3 days or so.....it seems to be working properly again.  Not sure whether there was a firmware update, either to the Garmin or the SRAM.   I will obviously see how it is does over time.  I am hopeful it was just a temporary glitch

  • For now my bell assigned to  left and right axs (Red E1) buttons at the same time but it’s not comfortable way

  • My SRAM pod controller only has two available buttons, gear up and gear down.....so I needed to add a single Blip controller, but it seems to work for me.  I do wish it allowed battery changes though, when the battery reaches EOL, but seems to be disposable (recyclable) only.

  • Quick unrelated question........cannot seem to figure out how to upload/insert a photo to a post in this forum.  Is there an easy way to do it from my iPad?  usually it is pretty simple, and just opens my photo app to choose an upload, but this insert photo prompt seems to just ask for a URL?   Thanks.  (sorry for veering off topic).   (searched a bit to try and find the answer...but could not find anything).  I may be missing something perhaps.
