Raster maps not working on 28.20 :(

After updating to 28.20 the raster maps that previously worked flawlessly will no longer display. I can see them there in the map list on the device, but selecting / deselecting doesn't have any effect any more. I've also tried deleting and re-adding them.

Is this a conscious decision, or something that will likely be corrected in a future update - this was one of the main issues for purchasing this device, so it will be a huge blow if they can not longer be used!!

Thanks.

  • I don’t get it… on the French Garmin website, if you go to Sport and Fitness (which the Edge series actually belongs to) → Cartographie de randonnées → Garmin Alpenvereinskarten v4, you can buy a raster map.
But when you check the list of compatible products, there are no Edge devices listed. Pretty misleading, isn’t it?

What makes it even stranger is that even the Forerunner models have access to raster maps and the Outdoor Map subscription, BUT NOT the Edge range — even though the 850 and 1050 have the best screens in terms of resolution and come at a premium price.

Maybe Garmin thinks raster maps would hurt battery life too much on the Edge series.

So can Garmin clarify this once and for all? I’ve just bought an Edge 850, but honestly I’m ready to resell it if raster maps aren’t supported. For MTB exploration they’re essential. The GPSMAP H1 is way too big to mount on a bike, so if neither the 850 nor the 1050 supports raster maps, I’ll probably have to switch brands.

  • Mine seem to be working again on firmware 29.22 :)

  • One slight snag is I can't turn off the basemap showing through them, but far better

  • I set map detail to ‘least’ and it stopped this from happening.

  • Absolutely gorgeous!

Different maps for different purposes. I was about to sell my Garmin 850, but now it’s a marvel. It’s incredible to see so much information on such a small screen.

The vector map is perfect for close-range scales and quick reading when linking together twisty trails, and the raster map makes it easy to orient yourself.

Perfect—thank you so much, Garmin! Please keep raster map support forever; MTB riders thank you.
