28.20 Unit automatically rebooted five times during a 50-mile ride

Went for a 50-mile ride today, following a course.  The 1050 automatically rebooted five times during the ride.  First the screen would go completely black for a second or two.  Then two words in tiny letters appeared in the center of the screen.  The second work was "diagnostics."  I never could make out the first word, because the lettering was so tiny.  Then after a couple seconds the unit would reboot.  After rebooting, the screen, including the map and parameters, would return to the state it was in when the unit went black.  Even my Varia reconnected.  All this happened automatically; I never had to touch anything.  When the screen came back the ride was paused.  After "unpausing," the Edge performed perfectly, until the next blackout.  The common denominator was that every time the unit went black, I was negotiating a turn at an intersection, either in the middle of the course, or after going off course and then rejoining the course by turning at an intersection.

  • The same happened today to me with my recent updated 1050.

  • I discovered the reason for my problem.  I was using a custom map I designed from OpenStreetMap.  I never had a problem with this map before.  With Firmware 28.20 Garmin apparently changed their symbology memory mapping, such that a certain class of roads no longer displayed on my map.  I didn't notice this because the heavy line denoting the course I was following was overlaid on that class of roads, hiding the missing roads underneath.  But because there was no road for the routing software to rely on, the GPS choked.  Changing the symbology in my map so that the class of roads are displayed again solved my problem.

  • That sounds interesting. I also use self-made OSM maps, and after the disaster with 13.13, I don't want to switch to 28.20 just yet. 13.14 is absolutely stable for me at the moment.
Is it possible for you to provide more information about the problem with the TYP file? I would be very interested and grateful.

  • I was using a custom linetype of width 3 that I mapped to 0x37.  It was a heavy black line.  To solve the problem I reverted to the default Mkgmap linetype of 0x05.  I should mention that I don't know all the ins and outs of designing custom symbols.  I do not have a computer science background.  I know just enough to be dangerous!  I use TYPWiz, and although I've read the manual, a lot of my custom symbols are developed through trial-and-error.

  • How that is done as my 1050 with 28.20 and OpenStreetMaps is doing the same continuous rebooting.

  • I don't know if your GPS is rebooting for the same reason mine was or not.  The only thing I can suggest is make sure all types of roads are displaying on the map.  If not, change the symbology for the ones that are not showing.  You might need to start with the default symbology provided with Mkgmap.  And maybe download the most recent version of Mkgmap first.
