Edge 1050 syncing woes

Hi folks, 

I have an Edge 1050 that I use for mountain, gravel & commuting rides between three bikes.  Overall I really like the device, but for the last 3 months it has been an absolute chore to get the device to sync my rides to Garmin connect.  I am using my fully up to date Pixel 9 and the Edge 1050 is also up to date on 13.14 because the newest version hasn't been pushed to me yet. 

When I finish a ride, Garmin Connect recognizes the 1050 as connected and tells me it is syncing, but the sync bar is stagnant.  Sometimes if I keep refreshing the sync page in Connect it will make little bits 5% increments (or something) of progress on the sync and eventually sync the ride... but A) I don't have time to do that after every ride and B) it doesn't always work anyways.

I suspect that the default answer will be to factory reset the device and that's fine, but I'd rather not lose all of the history on the device itself -- e.g. how many miles I've done on commuting with that device versus mountain bike etc.  Any advice is appreciated -- I'm on hold with Garmin Support right now but they are speculating a 2+ hour hold time and the office might close before i get through haha

We also tend to overestimate and then answer more quickly, and most regions offer a callback system to help reduce the time spent listening to our hold music. 

    For immediate help, this FAQ may or may not be of assistance, and this one addresses some symptoms that may be addressed for Android users specifically. Before completely resetting your Edge, I would recommend removing your Edge from the Garmin Connect App, then removing from your phone's bluetooth settings, and finally forgetting the pairing in the Phone settings on the Edge itself. You can then pair these two again as if they were new before testing again with normal use. 

  • Thanks Blake -- I definitely won't factory reset my phone, but I am willing to factory reset the 1050 if that's the only likely way to make it start syncing consistently again.

    That said, I just removed the device in Garmin Connect and Bluetooth... and now I'm getting the Pairing Failed screen every time I try to link the two together.  I tried powering off & on the device, and the new problem persists.

  • Your device is fine.  The issue is the Garmin Connect app on your phone.  To make syncing trouble-free, disable the phone connection and enable WiFi.  This way your device will never talk to the phone.  Your rides and routes will sync via WiFi only and work 100% of the time.

  • Try uninstalling Garmin connect on the phone and then reinstalling it. 

  • My apologies! That was a typo and I was meaning to respond to you mentioning factory resetting your Edge from the initial post. I've edited my reply accordingly. 

    I would be curious to hear if you see any different results after removing and re-pairing this. 

  • Thanks Cheracogoff, I tried that this morning with no luck -- because I unpaired the Edge 1050 from thew Connect and it refuses to re-pair to my phone, I can't say for sure whether that would have solved the sync issue or not haha

  • Unfortunately no luck!  I did make some headway by plugging the device into my desktop and using Garmin Express to update to 28.20, but it still refuses to re-pair with my phone and therefore syncing is out of the question.

  • Where does the failure to connect occur? Does it scan the QR code?

  • I had the same problem, and it seems version 28.20 has improved both WiFi and Bluetooth syncing. 

    Now that I post this, it probably stops working tomorrow.

  • I've the same problem since 28.20

    The Edge does not sync to Garmin Connect unless I reboot my mobile phone and the device boots with an active Bluetooth connection to the Edge.

    My Venu 3 works fine without any issue and the Edge was also without any problems before 28.20
