How to use OpenMTB Maps with 28.20

Hello,

Since beta and as well now in final version 28.20, OpenMTB maps leave the Garmin Edge 1050 unusable and locked in bootloops as stated already in the beta forum. There is no response from Garmin Support other than: Don't use non-Garmin camps. As this is only reason I chose the Garmin over a Wahoo I cannot state how unstatisfying my experience with Garmin is. Does anyone have any idea on how to get the maps working again?

thanks.

  • Same issue here. I managed to delete OSM map from the device and then I was able to get it up and running. Re-installed OSM-map and immediately it started rebooting.

This is unacceptable from Garmin. We need to have possibility to use other maps than what Garmin provides with the unit.

  • Which exact version of the Germany Map did you load onto the device and did you use BaseCamp?

I downloaded „Germany“ from openmtpmaps yesterday - don‘t know what version it is at the moment. Extracted the EXE file on my PC (Windows). Chose the map in Basecamp and built the IMG with Bascamp „create map“ (MapInstall).

  • My Germany map is the one from 18.08.2025 and was installed in my Edge with Garmin Mapinstall. And I use Basecamp (on a Mac) without issues.

  • For any users who are experiencing this, we will need responses to the below items.

    • Do we have permission to email you?
      • do not share your email here, we will pull this from your account
    • Are you able to connect this Edge to a computer?
    • What maps do you have installed?
      • Include 3rd party maps
    • What were you doing on your Edge when your crash/reboot occurred?
  • Yes, you can contact me.

I can Connect the device to a Computer. I had openmtb maps for Germany installed (free version) with the previous firmware 13.xx I think. As soon as I installed the first 28.xx beta, the device was crashing randomly during a ride. Sometimes after 5 minutes, sometime after 20 minutes and ended in a bootloop until I shut it down. It was happening with and without navigation. In addition to the openmtb maps I just had alle preinstalled maps on the device.

  • Yes, you can contact me. I’ve also opened a ticket, send you a video & diagnostics.

Yes, I’m able to connect the device to PC via Garmin Express & access the internal storage.

Maps: Garmin Europe, Trailforks and Finnish OSM-map (tk_finland.img, this is from Trailmaps app. And this was the problem since removing it solved the rebooting issue but now I cannot use the map & routes based on it)

What I was doing? Nothing. Just ended my ride, saved it and Edge asked me to update. After that it went to an endless loop. I’m not part of beta program, so the update was public version.

  • Yes you can contact me.

I can connect my device on a computer (MacOS)

I have Garmin Topo West Europe installed + OpenMTBmaps for Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg, Germany, Switzerland, Alps, France and Italy all in 18.08.2025 versions. I only have crashes with Netherlands and Belgium maps, other maps are working fine. All these maps were fine on 13.14 software and crashes appeared with the 28.** firmware versions. I tried to remove all maps (including Garmin TOPO) and just install the Belgium OpenMTB map but I still got reboots in that configuration. Issue really seems to be related to some maps.

Crashes occurs when displaying the map, scrolling and/or zooming IN/OUT. It can occur after a few minutes or just a couple of seconds. I get a back screen with “Saving diagnostic” message (or something similar) and the devices reboots. If the failing maps are installed but not displayed, device won’t crash.

I hope this helps you to find out what the issue is.

  • Big question is? Is it Garmin or OpenMTB map that has something wrong? Even if it was triggered by a garmin firmware upgrade, doesn’t say that Garmin is to blame even if their history with bugs, regression bugs and poor testing that doesn’t impress me at all. I’m running custom maps from frikart and experience no problems at all.  At the moment all my Garmin native maps and climbpro is disabled.

  • Ofcourse it may be so that there is something inherently wrong with OSM-maps but hen again they have worked ages already and worked until the last Garmin update. So, my money is on Garmin’s fault.

  • …and it‘s not only OpenMTBmaps which do not work anymore on some devices, some users reported of problems with other custom maps.
