How to use OpenMTB Maps with 28.20

Hello,

Since beta and as well now in final version 28.20, OpenMTB maps leave the Garmin Edge 1050 unusable and locked in bootloops as stated already in the beta forum. There is no response from Garmin Support other than: Don't use non-Garmin camps. As this is only reason I chose the Garmin over a Wahoo I cannot state how unstatisfying my experience with Garmin is. Does anyone have any idea on how to get the maps working again?

thanks.

  • No, I used the free version, installed on Windows, loaded via BaseCamp. They were already installed when the bootloop started to happen after the update to 28.18.

  • Same issue here… my previously installed and perfectly working OpenMTB maps on previous firmware seems to cause that reboot loop since 28.20 update. What a frustrating situation.

  • I know, that‘s of no help in your situation, but I‘m on 28.20 too and OpenMTBmap (Alps) works with no problem. It seems, only some devices are affected by this bug.

Some other user are reporting another bug since 28.20: they cannot update or load IQ datafields, because „the device is not on actual software“.

Still other user are reporting that Climb Pro is not working anymore.

Very strange, because my 1050 on 28.20 still works without all this problems…

  • Would you mind trying the OpenMTP Map for Germay and see if that causes a bootloop? It can simply be revoked by afterwards deleting the map file from the device. Maybe that gives a hint for troubleshooting.

  • As user of your excellent data fields (thanks a lot for that!) I noticed the same bug with actual firmware version. I tried to delete all files of the Garmin folder of my device and it worked after factory reset. I hope this might help some with that issue (don't forget to backup all file before if you try, I'm not responsible if your devices get bricked during the process)

Regarding the maps, as I'm currently in the Alps, I tried to install that map and I noticed everything is working perfectly. I then tried with my local maps : Belgium and Netherlands and it fails all the time. I then tried other maps : Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Luxemburg and haven't been able to replicate the issues. This might be related to some maps.

Question to other user facing crashes while using openMTBmaps : what maps are you using?

  • I tried to delete all files of the Garmin folder of my device

Out of curiosity: you deleted all sub folders or „only“ all files of the /Garmin main folder?

  • Would you mind trying the OpenMTP Map for Germay and see if that causes a bootloop?

Downloaded Germany and transferred to Edge 1050 - no bootloop on my device.

  • I deleted all allowed files and subfolders of Garmin folder. Some files/subfolders seemed protected and couldn’t be deleted but everything else was deleted

  • This is interesting. Which exact version of the Germany Map did you load onto the device and did you use BaseCamp? I will also try to load latest maps again this evening and see if it works now.
