Consequences of joining a GPX round-trip track somewhere in the middle.

When a GPX round-trip is joined somewhere in the middle, this has adverse consequences, such as the ETA and remaining distance are calculated only from the location where the track was joined and the navigation ends when the official stop location is reached. Then, a new navigation has to be started to navigate the rest of the - yet unridden - distance, with the same consequences as described.

Example: a round trip comprised of 20 miles distance and the track is joined at mile #10. Then only the remaining 10 miles are being calculated, not the full 20. At position 20, a new navigation must be started to cover the remaining 10 miles to return to the starting position.

Hence my question, is there an option to "close" such courses so that start and end are joined to form a "ring" which can be joined at any position and then distance and ETA are calculated from the location where the course was joined? Any ideas?

  • I would also like to have the option of once joining a “know” and “selected” course, if it being a loop, navigation sets you up for the entire loop from “your” starting point/entry.

Maybe the newer units have gotten better but the devices had no problems picking the end point of a loop if you happened to start the course nearer to the end point than the start point. This would cause the device to think you have just ended the ride rather than starting out.

Put another way, these devices really don't have any "concept" of a loop course. They treat all courses the same.

My advice for creating loop courses is to end the course short of the actual end point (so that the the start point is closest to wherever riders start the course).

  • ETA I understanding is a tricky one.

on the other hand a lot of existing courses are loops available from anywhere.

At least the possibility to have the navigation to continue when reaching the “designated end point” would ease and alleviate the need to go back in navigation and choosing the course from the list, which is sometimes an involving action in not secure roads/situation.

Question of OP could be split, if ETA is “not manageable” at least the “continue navigation course” after reaching is a nice feature to add, could be discussed further.

  • It might be “nice to have” like a lot of things. It doesn’t appear many people are asking about it. And things work as they are. There are likely bugs that should be fixed first.

Realistically, it’s not likely Garmin will ever add it.

  • @Labbyrun Did you create the roundtrip on the device and saved it as a course for later use? If yes, you have several options:

    1. If you have a computer available, export the course as .gpx and make a cut at the intended start position and let the end part stop about 100m before the new startpoint (Basecamp or Mapsource). This creates a gap. Then link the pieces at the original starting point. You now have a new roundtrip with a new start / end point. Save as .gpx (track) and export the file to the 1050 in the folder ..\Garmin\Newfiles. The 1050 will convert the track to a course as usual. Start cycling at the new startpoint. Happy cycling!

    2. Before you start cycling from your new start position, mark that location and save it on the device with a suitable name (Saved Location). Start cycling from your new starting point - don't forget to start the timer. Once arrived at the original end point the course is signalled to have reached the end and the course disappears from the screen. Now, without stopping the timer (!!), reload your roundtrip/course and start cycling to your own (new) starting point following the original roundtrip. Happy cycling! The only issue maybe is that you'll get more ETA's because you are cycling separate stretches on the same course. How important can that be?

  • You can even use this utility, which makes the job even easier geo.javawa.nl/.../

This (adding the start as a location) isn't doing a lot. He can just ride along the course to where the cynan activity line starts.

He was commenting about the ETA issue. So, it's important to him, I guess. Maybe, you missed adding "/s"?

  • Thanks, did not know this site. JaVaWa is great!
