fine tune mode

Why Edge 1050 is not compatible with Shimano EP801 motor fine tune mode?

  • I have been successfully using Edge 840 with my ORBEA Rise 2023 ebike, powered by Shimano EP801. I enabled fine tune mode, meaning that instead of the "classic" ECO, TRAIL, TURBO modes I use 1 to 15 levels of assistance. Shimano STEPS app on Garmin Edge seems not compatible with Shimano fine tune mode, very strange as both are coming from Shimano. Luckily, ORBEA made available on IQ store the ORBEA RS TOOLBOX app, that perfectly displays the assistance modes when Shimano fine tune is enabled.

However, my biggest (and expensive) mistake was to purchase Edge 1050, because of its bigger display. Edge 1050 is NOT COMPATIBLE with Orbea RS TOOLBOX in addition with the not compatibility of Shimano STEPS with its own EP801 motor in fine tune mode.

I strongly recommend not buying Garmin Edge 1050 if you have a Shimano EP801 powered ebike because the two devices are not fully compatible.

I am leaving my unused Edge 1050 at home and I returned to Edge 840.

I don't know if the problem is with Garmin, Shimano or Orbea: the result is that I spent +700 Euros for a useless Garmin device.

This matter is known since almost one year, but it seems nobody is reacting.

    My best regards

  • Hello , thanks for your post.

The Orbea Connect IQ app has not been updated for compatibility with the Edge 1050 (Last updated: Sep 29, 2024). The developer maintains Connect IQ applications and I would encourage you to reach out to Orbea using the Orbea RS Toolbox 'Contact Developer' option.

    • Edge devices are natively compatible with ANT+ eBike systems and can communicate specific data via ANT+: Features Supported After Pairing an eBike to a Garmin Device
    • Edge devices do not support Bluetooth (BLE) eBike data natively, and require the use of 3rd party apps like those from Orbea and other eBike manufacturers for specialized/customized data.

The Shimano data screen is a native ANT+ option for many Garmin devices and compatible Shimano eBike systems, I have escalated your report so that Garmin can investigate what improvements can be made.
