Any way to flip the display on the 1050

Having paid for a longer mount for my Madone gen 6 integrated one-piece bars back in January, I now find that my new Madone gen 8 bar also assumes Garmin wouldn’t be crazy enough to move the mount point.

Ironically it fits perfectly upside down. I will have to use it like this until I can pay out another waste of £50 to get a longer mount, unless there’s some secret magic way to rotate the screen image 180°?

  • I have to say, it was surprisingly ok using it upside down!

  • Garmin stopped supporting landscape mode on the 1000 series devices many years ago. No one really ever used it, according to them.

  • Oh yeah I can believe that but an inverted portrait mode would save a lot of 1050 mount incompatibility heartache

  • And it might very well introduce a bunch of complexity for the programmers that end up as display bugs for the 99.99% of users that couldn't care less about landscape mode. There are less invasive solutions to the mounting problem. Someone makes an adapter for standard mounts that offsets a 1050 the required distance towards the front. I've seen it, but don't remember where.

I use the Silca Chisela/Moots stem mounts and they all work just fine.

  • The mount point change on the 1050 was a major fail, regardless of any claim by Garmin otherwise. They should have trimmed the bezel, made it a little thicker, or stronger or whatever. The mount position should have been sacrosanct. The first commandment on the ten commandments of Edge device design.

I played Russian roulette with "spoon" style mounts and never found one that fit my Canyon Grail. The bars on my new gravel bike technically do "clear" but the fit is so tight that it's very difficult to press the buttons and the silicone cover is wedged between the unit and the bars.

An option to rotate the display 180 degrees would "solve" the problem, albeit in a rather silly way, but I'd take it.

  • K-Edge make an offset spacer for their mounts so that the 1050 fits: https://k-edge.com/products/garmin-edge-1050.

  • That's the one I was thinking about upthread. I just couldn't remember who made it (since I don't need it anyway).

  • I guess that's another solution, but it's still a big fail that an aftermarket solution is required.

It's also an illustration of the sad state of Garmin "reviewers" that this mount issue wasn't more than a casual mention. Anyone who gives a bad review probably gets on the *** list for future access.

  • Well, it's really that an aftermarket solution is required just for aftermarket mounts that are too short. The 1050 is bundled with mounts that don't require an aftermarket solution to fit the 1050. If they don't work for you then you need an aftermarket solution anyway.

  • I wonder how they knew nobody used it?  I think I have a picture somewhere of the unit in landscape mode on my bike.
